​The countdown to Causal Islands is heating up with our first wave of speakers announced for the inaugural conference. Among them are Jenn Schiffer, Director of Community at Glitch and Fastly, Gordon Brander and Chris Joel, CEO and CTO of Subconscious, Inc., and Jon Corbett, a computational media artist.

At​ the end of January we co-hosted a Vancouver DWeb Social with the Internet Archive of Canada. Our speakers were Fissioneer Blaine Cook, who gave a presentation on the Fediverse, and Claire Atkins from Check My Ads, who shared her company's work on fighting disinformation in advertising.
Recordings of both presentations are now available on the Fission blog.

Dialog: a far edge database for local-first applications and autonomous computing agents. 
Dialog is an eventually consistent data store that combines content-addressable storage, from projects like IPFS, with the rich distributed query semantics of Datalog. It builds off of existing ideas from the WebNative SDK to empower developers to build new types of local-first applications.

We're excited to be breaking ground on the next piece of our edge computing stack. You're welcome to follow along with our research team, and soon, get involved in the implementation of this open source codebase.

A little last minute for the event tomorrow (today!), Thursday, Aug 25th, at 9am PDT, 12pm EDT, 1800 CEST. We're joined by Danny O'Brien from the Filecoin Foundation. Danny was previously at the EFF, and  recently joined the Foundation full time .
The Filecoin Foundation's goal is stewarding the governance of the Filecoin ecosystem, funding critical projects around it and advocating for the future of Filecoin and its stack of decentralizing tools: IPFS, libp2p, etc.
​The foundation team will also be building out the Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web (FFDW), the charitable wing, whose activities include preserving and distributing the world’s knowledge, supporting the dweb community, funding related R&D, and educating the public about the benefits of a redecentralized net.

We've now got a recovery kit option in the  Fission dashboard . Since we don't have the keys to your private content, we didn't previously have a way to help you get it back if you lost access. Now, based on related R&D we did for Protocol Labs and Filecoin, we can give you a recovery kit that you can store, which when combined with the other half of the kit on our servers, can unlock your encrypted content and link it back to your account.
This is a pretty big technical milestone, we still have lots of work to do on usability. For now — please  do  go and checkout the  recovery kit flow  and store it somewhere safe.

The Tools for Thought  Part 1  &  Part 2  recordings and links are now up on the blog. We may intersect this topic in future Fission Tech Talks, but this will spin off into its own community speaker series. You can  follow the ToolsForThought profile  directly and unsubscribe from Fission if you prefer — we won’t be offended!

June 24th:  PolyPoly, Fair Economic Systems for Data,  with Laird Brown: a less technical, more policy and business model focused talk on data co-ops and more.
First week of July summer break: Happy Canada Day! Happy Independence Day!
July 8th:  Building Zero Data Apps & Entrepreneurship, with Rosano:  what are business models and support structures for building & maintaining apps that don’t centralize data?

Tools for Thought, Upcoming Events June

This week, on Thursday, May 20th, we’ll have our monthly Fission Demo Day.  You can register on Luma »
We’ll be covering:
Fission joining the Decentralized Identity Foundation, and upcoming platform support for DID interop
Fission VS Code Plugin: create new apps and publish directly from within VS Code
Account Backup: a demo of the alpha version of secure account backup. 
Plus, Jeremy Ruston will demo some of his recent updates on  TiddlyWiki .
Our next two Fission Tech Talks will be a special large scale discussion on interchange between different Tools for Thought.
May 27th: Tools for Thought Interchange:  an overview of atJSON by Blaine Cook, and how it is used at Conde Nast as a “100 year format”, plus a group discussion on other topics related to the tools for thought universe
June 3rd: Tools for Thought Interchange Part 2:  scheduled for an Australian time zone friendly slot, Iian from Codex Editor will talk about Standoff Editors and showcase his work. We’ll continue other topics from the first event.
