How do we prepare students to participate in the emerging workplace opportunities offered by quantum information science? We need to focus more broadly on how this technology is going to evolve and the range of skills that will be needed to support it. And from a learner's perspective, the fact that this represents a range of career opportunities that are only going to grow and morph and evolve.

According to research from MarketstoMarkets, the overall quantum computing market is expected to grow from USD 93 million by 2019 to USD 283 million by 2024 at a CAGR of 24.9%. The QCaaS market is expected to grow from USD 4 million in 2019 to USD 13 million by 2024 at a CAGR of 26.8%.

In the next decade, discoveries arising from quantum information science (QIS) will transform businesses including energy storage, chemical engineering, drug discovery, financial portfolio optimization, materials science, communications, and more.

Making advances in the field will require a range of skillsets - certainly, people with backgrounds in physics, math, and computer science as well as electrical and mechanical engineering will be in demand.

But as with any emerging technology, an entire ecosystem of adjacent businesses is appearing to build the lasers and dilution refrigerators and workbenches needed to evolve this new approach. In addition, people with communications and marketing talent will be critically important when creating and sharing the messaging.

There are also roles for people with skills in management consulting, operations, legal, regulatory, and policy issues as well as education.

Christopher Bishop and John Barnes share their perspective on how the quantum workforce is evolving and how to be successful in this exciting new field.

The session is a 45-minute interactive virtual workshop that includes a socio-historical perspective on quantum technology's evolution and attempts to demystify how to actually get a job working in the field of quantum information science.

Substantial in vitro and physiological experimental results suggest that similar coherent spin physics might underlie phenomena as varied as the biosensing of magnetic fields in animal navigation and the magnetosensitivity of metabolic reactions related to oxidative stress in cells. If this is correct, organisms might behave, for a short time, as “living quantum sensors” and might be studied and controlled using quantum sensing techniques developed for technological sensors. I will outline our approach towards performing coherent quantum measurements and control on proteins, cells and organisms in order to understand how they interact with their environment, and how physiology is regulated by such interactions. Can coherent spin physics be established – or refuted! – to account for physiologically relevant biosensing phenomena, and be manipulated to technological and therapeutic advantage?

Prof. Clarice D. Aiello is a quantum engineer interested in how quantum physics informs biology at the nanoscale. She is an expert on nanosensors harnessing room-temperature quantum effects in noisy environments. Aiello received her Ph.D. from MIT in Electrical Engineering and held postdoctoral appointments in Bioengineering at Stanford, and in Chemistry at Berkeley. She joined UCLA in 2019, where she leads the Quantum Biology Tech (QuBiT) Lab.

Unraveling Quantum Biology with UCLA Professor Aiello

Quantum Information Science (QIS) is an emerging technology with great potential to impact computing, communication, and sensing. This talk will highlight and describe the physics of several quantum objects that enable the realization of qubit devices. The combination of quantum physics, information theory, electrical engineering, and materials science are needed to understand and advance this exciting technology. This interdisciplinary nature of quantum information science and engineering creates a broad range of possible career pathways for those interested in both hardware and software aspects of QIS. 

Christopher J.K. Richardson is a research scientist at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences and an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland. He received his PhD and MS degrees in materials science and engineering from Johns Hopkins University and his BS degree in engineering physics from the University of Maine. He has authored papers and conference contributions in technical areas spanning epitaxial material design, growth, materials characterization, optoelectronic devices, and superconductor resonators. His current research interests include molecular beam epitaxy of dissimilar materials and the materials science of quantum computing

What is a Qubit?

Overview: Quantum computers have the potential to solve problems that classical computers cannot. However, as anyone who has run something on Qiskit is well aware, qubits are highly noisy. In order to run useful quantum computations, it will be necessary to perform error correction to eliminate this noise. In this series of interactive lectures, we will explore the ideas behind error correction at increasing levels of detail, going from an overview of the general principles behind error correction to an introduction to the surface code, the current leading candidate for quantum error correction. Quantum error correction is a highly active area of research, and correcting quantum errors is the next hurdle to overcome on the road to a useful quantum computer.

Week 1: This introductory lecture will introduce the basics of classical and quantum error correction. Anyone who has spent any time reading about quantum computing and playing with Qiskit should be able to follow this lecture. 

Week 2: This lecture will introduce the stabilizers formalism, the mathematics behind developing quantum error correcting codes. We will also explore the two simplest quantum error correcting codes, the Shor code and the Steane code. For this lecture, students will benefit from a knowledge of the Pauli operators, Pauli eigenstates, and the basics of quantum measurement. Before the lecture, I would advise everyone to try and solve this introductory problem: Given two qubits in the state |+>|+>, what will happen if I measure the operator Z1*Z2? Here, Z1 represents the Pauli Z operator on the first qubit and Z2 the Pauli Z operator on the second?  If you can solve this problem, you should have all the necessary background to follow the lecture. If you can't solve this, ask about it on Discord! 

Week 3: In this lecture, I will introduce the surface code, the leading candidate for quantum error correction. Implementing this code is the primary goal of groups at Google, IBM, Amazon, Yale, and many others. Understanding this code requires the same tools as we will use in week 2, but used at a higher level.

An Introduction to Quantum Error Correction

Quantum computers are anticipated to solve particular computational tasks from factoring to molecular simulations substantially faster than conventional computers. Depending on the task, such quantum computers need to be composed of hundreds to millions of qubits, the principal building blocks of a quantum processor. Present-day quantum processors comprise tens of qubits and are not yet able to execute any meaningful computations due to, among others, a lack of scalable and precise calibration and control techniques. In this presentation, Benjamin will discuss the challenges of controlling and calibrating quantum systems and why realizing the promise of quantum computers depends on efficient and robust quantum control routines.

Maëva Ghonda is the Global Quantum Intellectual Property (IP) Expert who also specializes in Corporate Strategy and Intelligence. Maëva is also the Chair of the Quantum Computing Education Certificate Program and the Host of the Quantum AI Institute Podcast, where she regularly interviews the chief executives shaping the future of Quantum Computing.

Maëva solidified her expertise in assessing Quantum Technology IP — including patents for Quantum Computing, Quantum Sensing, Quantum Gravimetry, Quantum Communications, and Quantum Cryptography — for investment theses and business cases while working as a Scholar for the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI), a U.S. government institution supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As a research scientist, Maëva’s work is centered on technological innovations — i.e. Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning — to tackle Climate Change.

Enrique Solano lives in Munich, Germany, where he founded Kipu Quantum, a startup designing quantum computing products for arts, exhibitions, schools, universities, and industry, with the goals of developing quantum aesthetics and quantum usefulness, as well as reaching quantum advantage of quantum computers for the present, not for the future. As a physicist he has lived and worked in Peru, France, Brazil, Germany, China, and Spain, occupying a variety of leading positions in academic institutions. He is constantly exploring interdisciplinary ideas and initiatives merging arts, science, technology, and entrepreneurship. Apart from his pioneering works in quantum computing and quantum technologies, he develops the novel concepts of Quantum Arts, Quantum Brain Networks, and the Quantum Metaverse.

Entanglement is one of the most striking ways in which quantum physics differs from classical physics, but exactly how it does so and how it can be used can be difficult to pinpoint. In this session, we’ll start from the basics of entanglement and learn about how we create entanglement in the lab, use it in different experiments, and verify it using tools like Bell’s inequalities.

Dr. John Donohue is the Senior Manager of Scientific Outreach at the Institute for Quantum Computing, a research institute at the University of Waterloo. John develops educational materials and events for educators and students of all ages to learn about quantum mechanics and quantum information. He earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Waterloo in 2016 with a research speciality in quantum photonics, quantum information, and laser technologies.

Quantum Machine Learning Basics: A Data Science Perspective With Catherine Potts (Hack-Q-Thon Workshop)

This talk hopes to provide a friendly overview of what Quantum Annealing is and its application towards problems such as Graph Isomorphism and Topological Data Analysis (TDA) in contrast to the traditional problems that are associated with learning about quantum annealing (MaxCut, Map Coloring, SAT, etc.)

John Long is the Workshop Director for Quantum Computing at Davis (QCaD) at the University of California, Davis and a part-time Quantum Software Engineer for If and Only If (Iff) Technologies. John has dedicated himself to producing lessons and content that aim to make learning about quantum computing as easy and as accessible as possible. John also works with Iff to utilize quantum algorithms and devices to aid in the development of large protein interaction models, such as between the COVID-19 spike and immune proteins.
