**Synopsis**

**Session 1:** Improving Large Language Models with Preference Optimization.
Speaker: Alberto Poncelas

Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) have quickly become part of our everyday interactions, making it essential for them to accommodate user preferences. Reinforcement learning helps achieve this by training models to choose the most appropriate response from various options, creating smoother, more engaging conversations. In this talk, we will demonstrate how preference optimization with RakutenAI-7B can enhance tasks like English-Japanese translation.

**Session 2:** Overcoming Challenges in Building an Open-Source Japanese LLM
Speaker: Johanes Effendi

Abstract:
We will share the journey behind developing Rakuten's open-source large language model (LLM) tailored for the Japanese language, emphasizing the technical challenges and solutions we encountered. We will explore the process of training the model, designing an extended tokenizer optimized for Japanese, and curating high-quality training data. Additionally, we will highlight the strong performance of Rakuten AI 7B, which ranks among the top open Japanese LLMs, and its release to the open-source community.

**Session 3:** Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning for Large Language Models
Speaker: Maksim Tkachenko

Abstract:
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance across a wide range of natural language processing tasks, but their size and complexity present challenges for fine-tuning in specific applications. Parameter-efficient fine-tuning techniques aim to address these challenges by optimizing only a small subset of the model's parameters, significantly reducing computational and memory costs. This approach makes it possible to fine-tune large models even on consumer-grade accelerators. This talk will focus on, probably, the most popular method of parameter-efficient fine-tuning, Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), discussing its mechanics, efficacy, and related insights.

**Speaker Bio**

o **Alberto Poncelas** is a research scientist at the Rakuten Institute of Technology. His research focuses on natural language processing (NLP), with a particular emphasis on machine translation. He holds a PhD in Machine Translation from Dublin City University in Ireland and an MSc in Machine Learning from the University of the Basque Country. He has also worked as a software and big data engineer.

o **Johanes Effendi** is a Research Scientist at the Rakuten Institute of Technology. He earned his PhD and master's degrees from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, where he developed approaches for semi-supervised speech processing and analytics. Prior to that, Johanes worked as a Mobile Application Engineer at Tokopedia in Indonesia. Currently, he is working on self-supervised approaches for natural language generation at Rakuten.

o **Maksim Tkachenko** is a Research Scientist with Rakuten Institute of Technology. He served as a data science and operations research advisor at FedEx Express and as a research scientist at the School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University, where earlier he earned his PhD. His research focuses on text mining and natural language processing at Rakuten.

*Marco Palladino (Co-founder and CTO at Kong)*
Marco Palladino is an inventor, software developer and Internet entrepreneur based in San Francisco. As the CTO and co-founder of Kong, he is Kong’s co-author, responsible for the design and delivery of the company’s products, while also providing technical thought leadership around APIs and microservices within both Kong and the external software community. Prior to Kong, Marco co-founded Mashape in 2010, which became the largest API marketplace and was acquired by RapidAPI in 2017.

*Robin Cher (Senior Solutions Engineer, Kong)*
Robin is passionate about all things regarding cloud connectivity and platform engineering. He worked closely with customers in designing their next-gen platform powered by Kong.Prior to Kong, Robin held platform engineering roles at companies such as DBS, GovTech SG and Thales Airlab. He holds a Master’s Degree in Technology from National University of Singapore and a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from Singapore Management University.
