Earthshot community! The institute is kicking off an Open Learning Circle, an event series where we gather together to discuss texts about how to regenerate the earth. We’re starting with Paul Hawken’s book, ‘Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation’ (2021). The book features ten chapters, each focused on a specific social-ecological system; they are: 

Oceans, Forests, Wilding, Land, People, The City, Food, Energy, Industry, and Action + Connection

On average, each of those chapters consists of nine articles of about a thousand words, taking about five minutes to read. Open Learning Circle sessions are open to all and occur once per week and last one-hour. This Learning Circle is 

 in the sense that you can choose to attend all of the sessions if you wish and if you choose to attend just one, that’s completely fine too. Over a ten week period, we will progressively delve into each of the ten chapters in Paul Hawken’s Regeneration book. Participants are invited to read at least one article from the chapter ahead of attending the Open Learning Circle and be ready to share insights about your reading experience, and listen and engage with those of others. And if you did not have time to read but are interested in the topic covered in the chapter, you are welcome to attend as well and recommend material related to it (articles, books, videos, documentaries, etc).

Open Learning Circle — Regeneration

Earthshot Institute has a lot going on. Our open-science ecosystem is growing beyond the traditional boundaries of disciplines and institutions to support frontline communities as they seek viable regenerative solutions. Scientists and technologists, designers and humanists, innovators and organizers—we’re coming together in focused teams to help build systems in which both nature and human communities can thrive.That’s a big mission, and we need some help supporting it. We are looking for people who are passionate about our cause, ready to volunteer a bit of their time, and awesome in any of the following areas:

Our next cohort of Earthshot Institute Labs, which will be announced later this month, will need a variety of technical and scientific proficiencies (and perhaps a few unexpected skills, as well, like fluency in multiple languages.) But right now we’re looking for other kinds of genius to help us keep up with this organization’s growth and achieve its wonderful potential. If you might be up for helping, please join us.

Over the last half century in the United States, the per-hectare volume of wood in trees has increased, but it is not clear whether this increase has been driven by forest management, forest recovery from past land uses, such as agriculture, or other environmental factors such as elevated carbon dioxide, nitrogen deposition, or climate change. This paper uses empirical analysis to estimate the effect of elevated carbon dioxide on aboveground wood volume in temperate forests of the United States. To accomplish this, we employ matching techniques that allow us to disentangle the effects of elevated carbon dioxide from other environmental factors affecting wood volume and to estimate the effects separately for planted and natural stands. We show that elevated carbon dioxide has had a strong and consistently positive effect on wood volume while other environmental factors yielded a mix of both positive and negative effects. This study, by enabling a better understanding of how elevated carbon dioxide and other anthropogenic factors are influencing forest stocks, can help policymakers and other stakeholders better account for the role of forests in Nationally Determined Contributions and global mitigation pathways to achieve a 1.5 degree Celsius target.

 will expand the possibilities of the traditional scientific literature review by calling on numerous participants around the world. Leland Werden, of ETH Zürich, is leading this effort to bring together a polyglot team of forestry data scouts to look well beyond the usual journals and databases and synthesize the world’s under-appreciated wisdom about what interventions work to regenerate forests. To join this lab, one just needs a bit of familiarity with forestry, or ecology, or a related field, and an interest in putting one’s data-digging skills to work.

, led by Anthony Acciavatti, of Yale University, will map and analyze a key feature of the Ganges basin—naalas—to understand how new forms of green infrastructure, such as parks, bioswales, and bioremediation, can rejuvenate this vital and sacred river. The lab will need people with expertise in remote sensing and machine learning (to identify and map naalas), river ecology and hydrology (to understand how they function and generate ideas for better management), as well as permaculture techniques and anthropology (to plan interventions on the ground). 

, led by Grace Lindsay, of NYU, returns to one of Earthshot’s foundational ideas: If we could use satellite imagery and machine learning to identify beaver dams, maybe we could start to understand—and even forecast—how these relatively small additions to a river result in dramatic transformation of local ecology. Beaver dams have been shown to result in greener, more drought-resilient waterways in semi-arid environments. By learning from their new database of natural dams, the lab will predict how humans can emulate their effects on biological productivity, carbon sequestration, and drought resilience. This lab will be calling for experts in remote sensing, machine learning, and riparian ecology.

Greetings Earthshot community! We want to give you a quick update on some of the recent activities here at the Earthshot Institute:
Our new suite of Labs are kicking off work!
Coastal Wetland Forest Lab held its inaugural meeting led by Elliott White Jr. We’re excited that another remarkable expert in this ecosystem, Dr. Lindsey Smart, will also be contributing to the work. The team is aiming to complete its literature review in the next six to eight weeks. Meanwhile, the Global Forest Lab, led by Aron Boettcher, is drafting a manuscript for submission. The working title is ‘A globally applicable, general-purpose tool for estimating biomass recovery rate.’
The Riparian Ecosystem Lab will have a new leader starting in August: the phenomenal Grace Lindsay, who has recently stepped into a new role as Assistant Professor at NYU. Huge thanks to Forrest Pound for his work in getting this lab off the ground and gracefully leading it through its first year of work—and also to Amgad Ellaboudy, for his development of the first machine learning model linking local changes in productivity to the presence of beaver dams. Under Grace’s leadership, the lab will be continuing its work to predict the ecological effects of simple regenerative interventions in waterways.
We have three new amazing labs in the works. They will call for some different skills than our previous suite of labs. So if you’re interested in bringing your particular genius to solving a problem that stands in the way of regeneration, please stay tuned. We are also planning a series of panel conversations on topics important to regeneration of social-ecological systems, a concept we’ve adopted from Elinor Ostrom’s work.
