You're invited (Working Homeschooling Moms Event)

I remember having in depth conversations about what careers we might pursue with my two closest friends at university, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech). Seems like eons ago now.
One mentioned in studying Geology, that the worst option and most likely option was helping oil/gas companies search for or extract petroleum or similar. Sure enough they now work for ConocoPhillips.
The other was in Mechanical Engineering and of course, they pursued a PhD in nuclear engineering, so working within the the military industrial complex might be likely. True enough, they worked for a firm notoriously linked to the Gulf War and now they work for a naval nuclear laboratory.
Sigh.
I remember thinking the worst places for me might be working in some sort of ecoside, bio weapons, or pharmacy where I'd be part of the medical industrial complex, could be for good, but most likely supporting for profit medicine. There was a time when I was heavily recruited by the Marines even before university because my ASVAB scores were top in nearly every category (except machinery).
None of us really stayed in touch. Our paths diverged a year after graduation. I was meant to be married to the mechanical engineer. Even an astrology chart done for me by extended family suggested that I would shortly be married (in my 20s) and had the possibility of becoming a great scientist.
Even fairly recently (2019), there was an alumni event in London and though I didn't know anyone, they all were doing impressive stuff but in ways that uphold capitalism. Undermining this system never seems to cross their minds, especially if it means being less comfortable. I have long felt like an anomaly, a misfit, even amongst these types of intelligent people.
Yet, I think I made a conscious decision to change this specific fate, leaving my abusive relationship, changing my course, finding a new dance teacher (Johanna Hongell-Darsee)/recommiting to Bharata Natyam, signing up for therapy, and getting my teaching qualifications, all in an attempt to find more meaningful work and illuminate and liberate from ways capitalism indoctrinates us.
Grounding myself in dance, in purpose, in education, in the humanities, and in my writing allowed me to hone my voice and explore a new reality.
I jumped paths again when I left the US and moved here, ultimately opening my business. I'm grateful for the opportunity, the resources, but also the steely courage.
Each choice point and action represents a degree of divergence, ultimately changing the trajectory of my life. Each act of us deliberately meeting our needs, following our joy, and asking the deeper questions, matters. Each moment of subversion, challenging what we were told, questioning our part in upholding a system that crushes us, consciously not exploiting the land, connecting with our north star, makes a difference.
Our ability to extend this beyond ourselves, to our work, our relationships, our communities, is crucial. In my work I have influenced the paradigm shifts of many different people, and their own choice points, to the deliberate divergence from upholding the expectations of capitalism to subverting it.

Unraveling the threads of capitalism 

Good evening from a soggy London,
I am loving the springy sunny weather and flowers as well as the spring rains.
It was an odd feeling for me this weekend. I generally forget about Bank Holidays and rarely intentionally take the time off or plan something. This time, we went to the park with a friend and had a walk and a picnic. We dined with the sun beams playing on our faces, the waft of fresh flowers on the breeze, and the company of ladybirds and daffodils as they danced nearby.
Occassionally, I'd feel a pang – an internal nudge that I should be working! That work of dismantling the impact of capitalism is continuous! Can you relate?
My little one took this perfect picture of a daffodil. It encapsulates the moment perfectly.


As I continue my journey through trauma, I continue to find myself in similar and cyclic patterns of healing. One such experience is discovery, to meet it feels like unpacking a suitcase after a trip or boxes after a move. But the items, don’t have a home and are filled with difficult memories. Instead of being put away, the room is now cluttered with piles. It’s a deeply uncomfortable experience. Another piece of the healing cycle seems to be relishing the moments of joy and calm. Even a couple of years ago, I was frequently in a place of hypervigilance, where sleep and joy felt elusive. Over the past couple of years, I have reclaimed that sense of calm and cultivated my practice in joy and pleasure.
Earlier in this process, that unpacking experience would max out my capacity but these days it’s a background hum of discomfort. And the moments of feeling joyful and present are very satisfying and increase my overall capacity. Thankfully, I’m held through this process with support. I shared some of my favorite tools and resources in a recent event.

On the bookshelf this week, I have been continually leaning into finding beautiful stories and articles to share with you all.
At least 3 people in my network were unaware of the Blackfoot wisdom that shaped Maslow’s work on hierarchy. Here’s an excellent article from 2021 that explores the topic. And apparently the documentary -- Naamitapiikoan: Blackfoot Influences on Abraham Maslow's Developmental and Organizational Psychology, explores it further. The collectivistic message about needs from the Blackfoot First Nations community that considered the generational impacts of these needs became subverted into a framework that emphasizes individualistic pieces and the current generations needs.
My friend Oskar Marchock shared this video from the Irish Film Festival. It’s a short 13-minute piece called Yu Ming is Ainm Dom / My name is Yu Ming. A Chinese man is bored in his life in China, daringly learns Irish and immigrates to Ireland. It’s short and lovely. I have always wanted to visit Ireland – this inspires me.
I also watched part of this excellent podcast on Zodiacal Releasing. In my first astrology reading with Amy Burnette Green several years ago, they mentioned a Loosing of the Bond transit. I recently revisited my session recording and wanted to know more about the transit and the technique.
{As an aside, I highly recommend working with Amy Burnette Green or Amanda Rekunyk for natal readings. In recent catch up with a friend, I mentioned the necessity of synastry in these readings. Ideally, your own chart (whether astrology or another modality) and the chart of your reader mesh well – the relationship and energies we have with the reader matters. It’s one of the reasons I stopped doing gift certificates for my human design readings. Selecting a reader is a deeply personal experience.}

I am loving the springy sunny weather and flowers as well as the spring rains.

It was an odd feeling for me this weekend. I generally forget about Bank Holidays and rarely intentionally take the time off or plan something. This time, we went to the park with a friend and had a walk and a picnic. We dined with the sun beams playing on our faces, the waft of fresh flowers on the breeze, and the company of ladybirds and daffodils as they danced nearby.

Occassionally, I'd feel a pang – an internal nudge that I should be working! That work of dismantling the impact of capitalism is continuous! Can you relate?

My little one took this perfect picture of a daffodil. It encapsulates the moment perfectly.

As I continue my journey through trauma, I continue to find myself in similar and cyclic patterns of healing. One such experience is discovery, to meet it feels like unpacking a suitcase after a trip or boxes after a move. But the items, don’t have a home and are filled with difficult memories. Instead of being put away, the room is now cluttered with piles. It’s a deeply uncomfortable experience. Another piece of the healing cycle seems to be relishing the moments of joy and calm. Even a couple of years ago, I was frequently in a place of hypervigilance, where sleep and joy felt elusive. Over the past couple of years, I have reclaimed that sense of calm and cultivated my practice in joy and pleasure.

Earlier in this process, that unpacking experience would max out my capacity but these days it’s a background hum of discomfort. And the moments of feeling joyful and present are very satisfying and increase my overall capacity. Thankfully, I’m held through this process with support.

Daffodils, Accessibility, and Planting Seeds of Change

​Good evening from London.
​It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon here! The little one and I played outside in with the jump ropes (we are loving our new Dope Ropes). 
Last week was very taxing on my body. My nervous system refused to relax until things calmed down.  It's thankfully all calm again after delivering an excellent training on anti-racism at a local school, a beautiful vow renewal, and a relaxing weekend. 
I will be attending this online session on Rasa later in the month. Rasa or 'flavor' is an essential piece of natya (dance and drama traditions). In Bharata Natyam, the rasa of love - whether motherly love, devotional love, or romantic love. We covered rasa at length in Bharata Natyam classes but it is really at the heart of storytelling. And the more I learn about it, it's connected to the heart of Hindu philosophy and understanding. Last year around this time I took two classes in Katha'koli - storytelling from a Hindu perspective. As a dancer, we use our body for telling tales and the rasa or flavors we invoke in our dance movements (and the music, costume, etc) is meant to invoke a similar shift in the audience members. That these moments bring us closer to a spiritual unity with the divine. I continue to explore ways to embrace the art of telling stories and holding space for a transformation in others - as a dancer and as a faciltator. 
Awhile back, I made this video on Shame as I processed my own shame. I recently found the video on marriage and abuse that I had mentioned and watched it again. We need to have different messaging for those in marriages (or any abusive relationship), that we can leave to take care of ourselves. Not stay and suffer and possibly die, rather than bring shame to our families. 
As we just renewed our vows, my relationship with my former fiance pinged in my mind again. It was an abusive relationship and I wasn't supported in my decision to leave him. I lost most of my friends and my own parents recommended I stay with him despite the abuse. And I know those living through DV need our love, support, and resources. 
On a happier note, we renewed our vows by the Thames this year in the pouring rain! Our hats, shoes/socks, and trousers were absolutely soaked by the time we got back home. What an adventure. Our little ritual brings me such joy. Here's us huddled under the umbrella.

I was a bit nervous this week! Thankfully I'm a bit calmer after delivering a great workshop in person at a local school. I haven't been to school in years! My friend Selina Boshorin, a school governor (board member), had put my name forward for this series of trainings on Unconscious Bias. We had our first session and here's what she shared:

Dating Dr. Dil, by Nisha Sharma. It's a love story about a Indian diasporic couple set in New Jersey. This story is getting quite interesting - I'm about halfway through. 
I love children's stories and this week, I finally finished The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser. It's a story of a biracial family in Harlem with 5 children. They are forced to move after their landlord refuses to renew their lease and the kids try to come up with ways to endear their landlord so they can stay. 
One thing I love about the Libby app is you can check out an audiobook and return many times and it keeps your place. 
I also printed this out for my kiddo and myself to look into where we need more support with Executive Dysfunction. It's an excellent printable that breaks down different components of ED. And the website features lots of other resources for ND people. 
And I'm in the middle of reading this journal article on looking at the health system and how it doesn't support First Nations peoples in the US. It's a short piece called: Culture as Treatment: A Pathway Toward Indigenous Health Equity by Autumn Asher BlackDeer, PhD, MSW. It's free to check out. 
I really felt the impact of this article as well - Met Museum kicked out someone for praying to their ancestral gods from Cambodia. I have frequently visited the V&A (Victoria and Albert museum) and in the Asian wing seen countless statues of Hindu and other dieties. I have felt the urge to make an offering, touch the feet of vigraham out of respect, or dance as this person did. And I have frequently felt the deep rage at these items on display, compounding the colonial trauma.

​It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon here! The little one and I played outside in with the jump ropes (we are loving our new Dope Ropes). 

Last week was very taxing on my body. My nervous system refused to relax until things calmed down.  It's thankfully all calm again after delivering an excellent training on anti-racism at a local school, a beautiful vow renewal, and a relaxing weekend. 

 on Rasa later in the month. Rasa or 'flavor' is an essential piece of natya (dance and drama traditions). In Bharata Natyam, the rasa of love - whether motherly love, devotional love, or romantic love. We covered rasa at length in Bharata Natyam classes but it is really at the heart of storytelling. And the more I learn about it, it's connected to the heart of Hindu philosophy and understanding. Last year around this time I took two classes in Katha'koli - storytelling from a Hindu perspective. As a dancer, we use our body for telling tales and the rasa or flavors we invoke in our dance movements (and the music, costume, etc) is meant to invoke a similar shift in the audience members. That these moments bring us closer to a spiritual unity with the divine. I continue to explore ways to embrace the art of telling stories and holding space for a transformation in others - as a dancer and as a faciltator. 

 recently found the video on marriage and abuse that I had mentioned and watched it again

. We need to have different messaging for those in marriages (or any abusive relationship), that we can leave to take care of ourselves. Not stay and suffer and possibly die, rather than bring shame to our families. 

As we just renewed our vows, my relationship with my former fiance pinged in my mind again. It was an abusive relationship and I wasn't supported in my decision to leave him. I lost most of my friends and my own parents recommended I stay with him despite the abuse. And I know those living through DV need our love, support, and resources. 

On a happier note, we renewed our vows by the Thames this year in the pouring rain! Our hats, shoes/socks, and trousers were absolutely soaked by the time we got back home. What an adventure. Our little ritual brings me such joy. Here's us huddled under the umbrella.

I was a bit nervous this week! Thankfully I'm a bit calmer after delivering a great workshop in person at a local school. I haven't been to school in years! My friend Selina Boshorin, a school governor (board member), had put my name forward for this series of trainings on Unconscious Bias. We had our first session and here's what she shared:

One thing I love about the Libby app is you can check out an audiobook and return many times and it keeps your place.

Good evening from London. 
How have things been with you? (Seriously! I'd love to hear. I will read what you share and aim to respond. But in all honesty, it might take me a few days to get back to you.)
This week was intense! I scheduled Friday for YouTube filming but instead - I've been preparing for an in-person workshop I'll be giving next Friday. This coming Thursday is going to be hectic as I prepare. I hope I get a chance to do filming this week instead.
And for those who don't know, our anniversary is coming up again. Peter and I have been married for nearly 13 years! How did that happen? As always, we'll head to the water to renew our vows to each other on Friday afternoon. It's not the same as the beautiful New Zealand waters and coast where we first shared them with each other. Inevitably, we forget the tissues (makes a mental note to put them in my handbag). And the business anniversary is also right around the corner!
It's becoming very clear to me, that I need to get better with delegation and focusing on my priorities (and my VERY long backlog from being ill the past few years!). I'll be bringing on some busines support in the new fiscal year (April 5th for UK companies). But I also need to figure out how to create an additional 2 hours in the day or release items. It feels like a a jigsaw puzzle but I'm up for the challenge. 
And finally, US folks! I finally got my US passport renewed (it's only been 5 years since the thing expired LOL). Yay me. So I might be planning a trip state-side in 2023. Should I plan an event or series of day workshops so I can meet some of you? Let me know.

Last week's Anuradha Asks sparked a great discussion over on Facebook. I heard lots of ideas around accessibility needed to support a neurodiverse workforce. People shared: 'allow work from home options', 'provide accomodations with out demanding paperwork of the disabled person to struggle to determine their needs for them', 'allow for multiple inputs (written, chats, emails, 1-1, cameras on/off)', 'allow for quiet spaces for working on site or provide/allow noise canceling headphones'. Another person mentioned that they often could do their work well, but because of the prejudice against ND folks they were pushed out of jobs because of social expectations. I will sharing some ideas of my own on YT this week. 
​Reflection question: In a recent conversation with an organization, I mentioned that 1 in 5 people have mental illness, a further 1 in 5 have a disability, and more recent statistics are showing 1 in 5 have dyslexia. It was a red flag to me, that in their organization of 60 strong they said they had no one with disabilities or ND. I have a few thoughts that I'll share over on YT. I invite you to reflect, in your spaces, to what extent are access needs being met? How can you be an advocate for those in the room who might not be comfortable sharing their needs? 
​Feedback: I have a great opportunity to talk about seeds coming up. I'd love some feedback from you. I give my presentation in 10 days and the practice presentation is coming up this week. If you've taken the course, what skills or concepts do you wish you knew about before enrolling? And if you haven't taken it, what do you think you need to know about the course, or preliminary concepts or skills before diving into the course in the Fall?

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (from 2015 or something) - Yes, I know. Why am I watching this?! I couldn't tell you but it's good background listening while I work. I think this season, I'm noticing the levels of ableism: in the ways they think, share, the expectations they have on themselves and each other, and the ways we don't believe disabled and chronically ill people. 

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Vol 5. by BBC Audio. We're working our way through this series about Ma Ramotswe, head of the detective agency in Botswana by Alexander McCall Smith. I love the voices and the sound effects - like the old days of radio. 
Dating Dr. Dil, by Nisha Sharma. It's a love story about a Indian diasporic couple set in New Jersey. I'm only on Chapter 4 and it's quite sweet. It reminds me of this article I read about eldest daughters I read this week. While birth order has been debunked, I think there is a certain relationship with first born females in certain cultures. 
And I finished a very short novella, The Wrong Suitcase by Laura Jane Williams. A very predictable and sweet romance at a destination wedding. 
Maybe I'm feeling sentimental about love since I'll be celebrating love with my sweetie? Am I the sappy one or is he? Maybe we both are. 
My wireless headphones are getting quite the mileage. Thanks Peter for selecting the perfect ones for me. 
And finally, here's a great graphic series on deep knowledge vs short form content consumption. While I appreciate short form content, I have definitely valued deeper knowledge and the nuance that comes with.

People shared: 'allow work from home options', 'provide accomodations with out demanding paperwork of the disabled person to struggle to determine their needs for them', 'allow for multiple inputs (written, chats, emails, 1-1, cameras on/off)', 'allow for quiet spaces for working on site or provide/allow noise canceling headphones'. Another person mentioned that they often could do their work well, but because of the prejudice against ND folks they were pushed out of jobs because of social expectations. I will sharing some ideas of my own on YT this week. 

 In a recent conversation with an organization, I mentioned that 1 in 5 people have mental illness, a further 1 in 5 have a disability, and more recent statistics are showing 1 in 5 have dyslexia. It was a red flag to me, that in their organization of 60 strong they said they had no one with disabilities or ND. I have a few thoughts that I'll share over on YT. I invite you to reflect, in your spaces, to what extent are access needs being met? How can you be an advocate for those in the room who might not be comfortable sharing their needs? 

 I have a great opportunity to talk about seeds coming up. I'd love some feedback from you. I give my presentation in 10 days and the practice presentation is coming up this week.  I read this week. While birth order has been debunked, I think there is a certain relationship with first born females in certain cultures.

Hiya! It's been a few weeks since I've been in touch. Truth be told, I've had my head down in ant work mode, submitting proposals and preparing for a couple of upcoming trainings. And personally, it's been a few weeks of internal processing and continued foundation setting. 
It's honestly been a few years since I wrote a proper newsletter, more regularly. And that's one of the foundations I want to build this year. And likely soon, these will be written by me but sent out by our new assistant. I'll tell you more about that adventure next time - I'm trying to select someone out of the top 3 candidates!

Back to Life - a British comedy/drama about a woman returning to her hometown after she served time for a crime. It was dark and beautiful in a way that US shows don't often capture. I adored the portrayal of Miri by Daisy Howard. 
Red, White, and Royal Blue, recently, I finished a sweet, queer romance novel by Casey McQuiston. It was recommended by some of you — thank you! Very sweet. I love that reimaging of the past few years in both the UK/US scene for a sweet romance. 

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Vol 4. by BBC Audio - the little one and I listened the first 3 a few years ago. We're working our way through this series about Ma Ramotswe, head of the detective agency in Botswana by Alexander McCall Smith. There are still Vol. 5-8 to check out.
