How to manage the spread of misinformation

Bad information ruins lives. In 2017, the United States faced its largest measles outbreak in decades, which was strongly associated with anti-vaccine messages spread in the Somali-American community at the time. Stories like this have become common, in areas from public health to national elections. In this workshop, we will go over the kinds of misinformation out there (fake news, propaganda, bots, "fake crowds" and so on) and will discuss strategies that might be effective in handling their spread. We will address a COVID-related case study for discussion.

Dr. Rumman Chowdhury is the Global lead for Responsible AI at Accenture. Her work consists of creating transparent, fair, and explainable AI for clients. She also serves as technical lead for a community-led project on combating pseudoscience on the internet.

Dr Chico Camargo is an interdisciplinary researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. His research consists in developing and applying new computational and quantitative methods for the social sciences, currently focusing on the dynamics of public opinion, political volatility, agenda setting and human mobility, and on the analysis of large-scale datasets. He is also very interested in using these new methods to investigate how the media environments we inhabit shape the beliefs we hold, the information we spread and the stories we tell.

Covid-19 has accelerated digitisation and has led us to question whether we will continue to flock to cities in the same way – anecdotal evidence suggests that 20%-30% of commercial office space in London will be released by current tenants. On the other hand, we are still physical, social beings and serendipitous encounters are at the heart of innovative economies and thriving communities; many would argue that we will simply adapt to new ways of inhabiting the urban environment, and that urbanisation will continue. Will we see new forms such as poly-centric cities and garden communities emerge as a consequence of these different influences? Working with property developers today undertaking large-scale regenerations in a variety of contexts from urban hubs to garden communities, these issues are at the heart of our attempts to design thriving, resilient, adaptable places, and to evolve the places we have today.

Dr. Rick Robinson is Director of Smart Places, Digital Infrastructure and Telecommunications for Jacobs. He advises cities, infrastructure operators, property developers and investors on the use of technology to improve buildings, infrastructure, places, communities and business and organisational performance. Previously, he has led Smart Cities businesses for Arup and IBM, and was Director of Technology for Amey, where he was responsible for driving advances in digital technology into public services and infrastructure that are used by about 1 in 4 people in the UK every day. Rick collaborates with a network of technology entrepreneurs, Universities and social institutions to explore innovations in digital technology, and has advised the UK Government and United Nations on their impact on the built environment, economy, communities and society. Rick is a member of the UK5G Steering Group, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Fellow of the RSA and a member of the Academy of Urbanism. He founded and co-chairs the Birmingham Smart City Alliance. Rick writes about his work at

Reading Together: The City We Became

Exponential.Do member Robbie Stamp is convening a thinking session to explore what it will mean to have meaningful relationships with non-human actors as we add AI into the complex mix of people and purpose, strategy, ethics, values in organisations and in the wider society.

In a series of thought experiments based on key concepts, such as agency, authority, accountability, the workshop will explore the emerging relationship between good old fashioned, chemical substrate Homo sapiens and other forms of intelligence.

Human affairs are messy and our relationship with AI will be full of contradictions and messiness too.

The outcome of this first workshop should be a new set of perspectives about “working relationships with AI” that could be helpful to consider, whether you work as a policy maker, government official, executive or indeed as a developer of software.

Robbie Stamp is the CEO of Bioss International. Robbie is a member of British Standard Institute National Standing Committee on AI and Senior Fellow in Resilience and Sustainable Development Programme at Cambridge University. Between 1995 and 2000, Robbie was CEO of h2g2, formerly The Digital Village, the company he co-founded with the late Douglas Adams in 1995. The company created the computer game Starship Titanic and h2g2.com, the real 'Earth edition' of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which was sold to the BBC. Earlier in his career, Robbie worked as a television producer on a series of documentary films on the environment, for Central Television's flagship documentary series Viewpoint that won over thirty major international awards, including in 1988, the prestigious Prix Italia for "Can Polar Bears Tread Water?" about global warming.

Cory Doctorow is a science fiction novelist, journalist and technology activist. He is a special consultant to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He holds an honorary doctorate in computer science from the Open University (UK), where he is a Visiting Professor; he is also a MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate and a Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of North Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science. In 2007, he served as the Fulbright Chair at the Annenberg Center for Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California.

Jeremy is also Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at Stanford and Bristol, and director of the Centre for Quantum Photonics. He serves as co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Council on the Future of Computing.

While the effects of the global pandemic are still raging, what has become universally clear is that the world at large was and is not prepared to adequately care for people and the planet. While the pandemic provides a highly specific medically oriented precedent for which to discuss wellbeing metrics, the logic of this conversation is to ask: how would the response to Covid-19 be different if business prioritized a triple bottom line or wellbeing oriented approach to its operations and marketing versus sticking with a single bottom line, maximizing shareholder profits model that we have today?

Robbie Stamp is leading a series of seminars on the nature of human embodiment, intelligence and consciousness. We'll explore the emerging relationship between humans and the non human “actors” (AI systems), that are now deeply embedded in the complex adaptive systems in which homo sapiens subsists.
