

A4FC Rematriation of Indigenous Foodways w/ Sara Calvosa Olson - Workshop #2 - Cooking Demonstration
Join the Alliance For Felix Cove & Sara Calvosa Olson (Karuk) for two focused and integrated programs on rematriation through Indigenous, Ancestral Foodways. In this paired series of two workshops we will be working with ancestral plant relatives of Tamal-liwa & Felix Cove. Workshops include plant phenology, identification, ethical gathering, learning nutrition and medicinal properties, ecosystems, lifecycle of species, and cooking demonstration.
Workshop #2 on June 14th will include a cooking demonstration of Indigenous, ancestral foods and community gathering taking place at Audubon Canyon Ranch Cypress Grove. (This workshop is a two part series. Please also enroll in Workshop #1 on June 7th here: https://lu.ma/xpojiyrj)
MENU: Nettle & Hazelnut Pesto w/ Gluten Free Pasta & Veggies. (can be made vegan) Savory Acorn Muffins (not gluten free) Strawberry Rhubarb Wild Rice Tart (vegetarian but not vegan, contains duck eggs) Elderberry & Huckleberry soda (sugar free) *Attendees will also be welcome to bring something simple to share with others.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Please wear layers and be prepared for warm and cold conditions. Wear clothing you don't mind cooking in or bring an apron to wear. Optional: Bring a small food item to share during lunch.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Sara Calvosa Olson (Karuk) is a food writer and author living on Huiman Coast Miwok Land. She is the author of Chími Nu’am: Native California Foodways for the Contemporary Kitchen (Heyday, 2023). Her work dwells at the intersection of storytelling, Indigenous food systems, security, sovereignty, reconnection, and recipe development. With an interest in using both culturally sound & faithfully updated techniques honoring traditional plants and animals, her cooking inspires a new look at the oldest foods in California.
