I am, like so many of us, gutted by the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. And yet, we’ve got to get real about it: know what the implications are and what we can do to mitigate the bad that will come from criminalizing abortion. So, in this issue, I write about both with the hope that we can move forward together.

Implications of Roe v Wade

Poverty. The typical women getting abortion today are poor and already have children. 40% of children in the US already live in poverty and we don't want to increase that. Unfortunately, with Roe vs Wade overturned, many women will be forced to have children and become more entrenched in poverty. As someone who comes from poverty this is heart-wrenching.

Death. We already have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. And with the criminalization of abortion, it’s expected that the maternal mortality rate will increase by 20%. These deaths are tragic and unnecessary.

Women of color. More women will die. And many of them will be from our communities. Today, pregnancy-related mortality ratios are 3.2Xs higher for Black women and 2.3Xs higher for American Indian/Alaska Native than for white women. As a woman of color this is devastating.

What we can do

  1. Know where abortion is legal, illegal, and what states can criminalize abortion next.

  2. Donate to and leverage resources of reproductive rights organizations such as Planned Parenthood, National Network of Abortion Funds, Abortion Care Network, Guttmacher Institute, and Sister Song.

  3. Tweet to the US government. “Hi @POTUS @KamalaHarris @SpeakerPelosi @SenSchumer,  now is the time to ensure that no woman or girl, no matter where she lives, is denied her fundamental sexual and reproductive rights. Will you legislate and defend women’s choices over their bodies and futures? #roevwade”

  4. Vote for legislators who support sexual and reproductive health and rights.

  5. Talk about access to safe abortion services because: everyone has a right to life, a right to health, and a right to be free from violence, discrimination, and torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
