About Event

This session is about staying centered, grounded, and able to remain choice-ful in moments that would otherwise throw us off. Whether it be an ignorant or divisive comment that was made, body language that felt rude or offensive, or even just a use of language that we found challenging, there are countless possibilities that we face when facilitating a group that might activate us.

It’s imperative in those moments that we know how to regulate ourselves in such a way that we can remain present and available for the group and for what we are leading. That is the unique responsibility we have as leaders and therefore we must be uniquely resourced for it.

We have all had moments that have triggered us or activated us and while those moments are inevitable our response doesn’t have to be.

This training is all about how you can navigate your triggers and be ready to handle those activating moments.

This is the third workshop in the Facilitating for the Future series, each workshop works at a standalone session AND taking the full series will give you the most well rounded experience and variety of skills to compliment each other.

WHAT THIS SESSION IS ABOUT

This session will cover the psychological aspects of triggers as well as methods for how we can navigate those moments successfully when leading groups.

We will cover:

  • A step-by-step breakdown of what happens when you get triggered

  • Mindsets you can prepare before you get in the room to help avoid potential triggers

  • Strategies to use when you are triggered to help you return to a centered space

Meg will present two models, one for understanding triggers and one detailing strategies for navigating our triggers.

Then the group will work through the strategy model identifying dozens of specific tactics for navigating triggers.

EXPECTATIONS OF THE SESSION

Participants will be invited to do:

  • Journaling exercises

  • Live polling

  • Large group discussions

  • Small group breakout room discussions

Be ready to participate! Participation in this event does not require your camera to be on (but we love it if you want to!). However, it does require participation in small group and pair breakout room conversations - so it’s not a good session to multitask during!

No late arrivals. Because this is a participatory session that builds on itself quickly, doors will close after 10 minutes and those who have not joined yet will not be allowed in.

The session will be recorded and shared. The recording will be focused in the main room, no breakout conversations will be recorded.

WHEN YOU SIGN UP YOU’LL RECEIVE

After signing up for Navigating Triggers you’ll receive an email with a link to add it to your calendar and details reminding you about what you can expect in the session.

WHO’S LEADING THE SESSION

Meg Bolger! An expert facilitator, social justice educator, and participatory educator.

Meg has been facilitating for over a decade and is currently the head of Facilitator Cards and POP Facilitation. Meg co-founded numerous projects and businesses including The Safe Zone ProjectFacilitatingXYZUnlocking the Magic of Facilitation, and Facilitator Cards and spent much of the last decade training trainers from around the country (and world) on the art of facilitation.

Meg’s roots in facilitation came from her work in social justice education and gender and sexuality workshops. She believes that facilitation is one of the key skills of educators, leaders, organizers, and facilitators who are trying to bring about meaningful change in the world. Her work in social justice spaces also gave her years of navigating hot topics, challenging conversations, and loaded disagreements in group settings.

Meg is passionate about the subtleties of what helps groups work, learn, collaborate, and connect with each other. She loves to break down the art of facilitation into skills that people can use to help humans collaborate, communicate, and connect better together.

Meg believes that as leaders, educators, trainers, and facilitators, we can make our spaces places that people feel good and want to be in. Her mission is to share everything she knows about facilitation to support everyone who is doing meaningful change work in the world.

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE?

This workshop is a highly participatory session. It is a real “show” over “tell” type session where you’ll get to experience our recommendations of how to facilitate first hand. Other than a mid-point break you’ll be actively engaging and participating throughout the entire workshop.

We’ll use a variety of methods including journaling, pair shares, live-polling, chat, small group work, large-group discussions, and more.

This session is limited to 100 participants. We cap at 100 so that we can still do pair-breakout rooms (Zoom limits to 50 breakout rooms) and have lots of meaningful small-group conversations.

The workshop will start right at the hour and we will close the door to the workshop after 10 minutes to ensure that the group has a cohesive learning experience.

WHO’S IT FOR?

People who want to be able to lead groups towards important and necessary social change work. Whether you’re a teacher working with students to teach critical thinking through examination of important topics, a facilitator/trainer who hosts workshops and conversations, a leader/organizer who wants to be able to host better collaborative and conversation meetings about hard topics, this session is for all of you.

It’s for those of us who do (and want to) be able to stay present in the face of the unexpected.

WHEN YOU SIGN UP YOU’LL RECEIVE
