WHO IS THE SERIES FOR?

The series is for leaders, educators, and facilitators who are looking to make a difference. Whether that’s facilitate students’ exploration of difficult and sensitive topics. Whether that’s run a meeting of new union members trying to come together to create a campaign. Whether that’s as a facilitator trying to help people navigate personal, challenging, or hot topic conversations.

There are tremendous challenges facing all of us right now and ensuring that we have the skills to help shepherd groups through those moments is essential. We need to be able to answer fundamental questions of facilitating group dynamics like:

  • How do you keep people from dominating a conversation and get everyone involved?

  • What do you do if someone says something offensive that upsets the group? Are there ways to keep the group together without agreeing with them (yes!)

  • How can we keep ourselves grounded and centered in the face of emergent challenges.

In Facilitating for the Future you will learn frameworks and methods that will allow you to feel confident and competent for the important work you’re doing in the world.

WE'LL EXPLORE HOW TO

Increase participation, the variety of voices, and types of shares in your sessions. No one wants to ask a question and hear crickets. By mixing up the ways you ask for participation you'll guarantee more voices in the room offering different perspectives.

Build trust within a group by mitigating social risk and vulnerability. It can be intimidating to share our thoughts in front of other people. Learn strategies that build trust and psychological safety while increasing participation and lowering anxiety in your sessions.

Respond to conflict in a way that leads to productive exploration and transformative change. We’re afraid of conflict arising in our spaces because we aren’t sure how to move through it in a way that is productive for everyone in the group. Learn how to balance acknowledging harmful comments without isolating or ostracizing anyone from the group.

Plan for the unexpected challenges that might throw you. When we facilitate groups, we open ourselves up to an enormous amount of emergence and unexpected dynamics. Being able receive those dynamics without being thrown off by them is an essential skill. We can build practices and find techniques that allow us to stay grounded before we face those tense moments.

WHAT WILL THE SESSIONS BE LIKE

Meg’s Zoom workshops are highly participatory sessions. Besides a mid-point break, everyone will be participating throughout.

Each session is limited to 100 participants. 100 participants means that we can easily do pair breakout rooms, small group conversations, and share in the large group while hearing from a lot of different people. We’ll use chat and live polling throughout the sessions to bring everyone’s voice in and usually hear from at least 15-20 different voices in the main room over the course of the workshop.

Each workshop flows a little bit differently and we’ll use a lot of different modalities across the sessions including journaling, pair shares, live-polling, chat, fishbowls, small group work, interactive handouts, and more.

Each workshop will start right at the hour and we will close the door to the workshop after 10 minutes to ensure that the group has a cohesive learning experience.

The sessions will be recorded and the recordings made available within 5 days of the sessions taking place. Only those who registered for the course will receive the recordings.

WHO’S LEADING THE SESSION

Meg Bolger! An expert facilitator, social justice educator, and participatory educator.

Meg has been facilitating for over a decade and is currently the head of Facilitator Cards and POP Facilitation. Meg co-founded numerous projects and businesses including The Safe Zone ProjectFacilitatingXYZUnlocking the Magic of Facilitation, and Facilitator Cards and spent much of the last decade training trainers from around the country (and world) on the art of facilitation.

Meg’s roots in facilitation came from her work in social justice education and gender and sexuality workshops. She believes that facilitation is one of the key skills of educators, leaders, organizers, and facilitators who are trying to bring about meaningful change in the world. Her work in social justice spaces also gave her years of navigating hot topics, challenging conversations, and loaded disagreements in group settings.

Meg is passionate about the subtleties of what helps groups work, learn, collaborate, and connect with each other. She loves to break down the art of facilitation into skills that people can use to help humans collaborate, communicate, and connect better together.

Meg believes that as leaders, educators, trainers, and facilitators, we can make our spaces places that people feel good and want to be in. Her mission is to share everything she knows about facilitation to support everyone who is doing meaningful change work in the world.

Not really. We close the doors after 10 minutes (so in that sense you can be up to 10 minutes late!) to ensure that the group has a cohesive learning experience. This isn’t to punish anyone it’s to ensure we can create a session that builds on the previous learning without anyone getting lost.

And we know life happens, which is why we make each session available via recording as quickly as possible for those who have unexpected delays/hindrances day of.
