About the Event
Unconference: an attendee-created conference agenda
Location: The Oasis Garden of the Shelborne Hotel — Go through the main lobby of the hotel, straight back through to the pool area. Beyond the pool is the Oasis Garden where our event will be held.
Friday, November 11, 2022, we're hosting an Unconference as the grand finale event for the Miami edition of the Dev Writers Retreat!
Unconference's invert the typical format of a conference so that attendees drive the discussion by creating an in-the-moment agenda. The spontaneous arrangement conjures a completely unique experience, composed of the present time, place, and people, where we can learn from each other and make deeper connections.
Attending the Unconference is perfect for those who cannot make the 4-day writing intensive, but would still love to meet and network with other like-minded writers/developers interested in growing their skills as communicators and creators.
How does an unconference work?
Unconference's have a bottom-up approach where attendees bring their ideas regarding writing, DevRel, community, and tech advocacy and form discussion groups around these topics with fellow attendees and thought-leaders. An unconference replaces a lineup of speakers and presentations with a collaborative many-to-many learning/teaching experience.

THE FULL WEEK LONG EVENT
DEV | WRITERS | RETREAT is a first-of-its-kind experiment in pushing forward the state of coders-who-write and writers-who-code, hosted in one magical week from Nov 7 to 11th in Miami, Florida.
Purpose
We believe that writing is an incredibly powerful way to organize thought, transfer knowledge, entertain millions, create luck and learn in public — and we believe that humans are social creatures that work best when they can get support from others doing the same thing.
Whether you write for work as a professional developer advocate, or for fun as an experienced dev, or for learning as a founder or newcomer, we believe that we can improve and learn from our fellow writers!
Formats & Schedule
You can take part in 2 ways:
Intensive + Unconference (5 days, Mon-Fri) $500
Unconference (Friday, Nov 11 only) $100
Each day from Monday to Thursday, we will follow a semi-structured program:
Morning: Talks, workshops, brainstorms (full schedule coming soon!)
Afternoon: Free (for focused writing or remote work, up to you!)
Evening: Group Dinner somewhere in beautiful South Florida
Monday: Goal setting, inspiration, aspiration
Tuesday: Topic choice + Formats
Wednesday: Editing + Craftsmanship
Thursday: Marketing your Work + Tactics
Friday is graduation day - a mass publish event and an Unconference where we share what we worked on, what we learned, and what's next.
Logistics & Pricing
Dev | Writers | Retreat is a not-for-profit, community effort by Michelle Bakels (co-organizer of React Miami) and swyx (Editor, DX.tips). We will charge enough to cover program costs and take sponsorships for the Friday unconference, but you will be responsible for arranging flight/accommodations on your own.
