Bree Street Closure Every Sunday

This Sunday is our last one for a little while - so make sure to there - not to mention we will have an action packed programme to help reimagine the street for people, not cars.

Join us for the Weekly Bree and Shortmarket Street Experiment where we close the road(s) to cars every Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM along where we’re inviting Capetonians to reclaim public space and reimagine a safer, more pedestrian-friendly city.

This initiative is supported by the Mayor's office and is not classified as an event or a street festival with food truck—it’s part of a new approach to using tools to create safer streets through temporary installations and hands-on activities to see what works and what doesn’t.

  1. When: Every Sunday

  2. Time: 10 AM - 5 PM

  3. Where: Bree Street (Wale to Strand, including Shortmarket St)

  4. How can I get there? MyCiTi runs on Saturdays, you can walk or cycle if you are close by or you can find parking by entering Shortmarket St via Buitengracht St.

  5. Map: here

  6. Activities* - this changes weekly. See below or follow us on Instagram to stay updated.

  7. Survey: we want your feedback: is this good or bad?

Every Sunday, Bree Street becomes a car-free, people-first space filled with community activities—think street games and sports like street cricket, cycling clinics, art installations, and more. For the 30/03/2025 we have the following street activities:
