DER + Data Science Seminar Series
About the Event
Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are small-scale generators (like solar panels), energy storage devices and controllable loads located on the distribution side of the electrical grid. The technologies are mature and cost-effective. But they are not yet integrated in a way that facilitates their full potential grid value.
While the complexity of DER integration is daunting, there is a robust data science toolset that helps us grapple with it. This event includes two 40-minute, seminar-style presentations exploring the unique behavior of these resources. Both presentations bring together DER technology expertise with open source data science tools.
Adam Morse: Creating Visualization Pipelines for Customer Load and Solar PV Systems
Adam has an electrical engineering background designing distributed energy projects for ProtoGen. His presentation provides:
An overview of the challenges associated with controllable DER, specifically PV
A background on setting up a Python/Anaconda data science work station
An visualization-focused tour through his methodologies for electrical load analysis and DER project modeling
Lawrence: Time-series Forecasting for Grid Battery Systems
Lawrence is an engineering manager with Apple. He presents an introduction to time-series data analysis and forecasting on energy data. The presentation uses a dataset from a research battery installation on the electric grid in Germany as a working example.
Lawrence starts with an exploratory data analysis to understand the essential trends, thens turn to forecasting using ground-up classical techniques, and finishes with a glimpse at modern machine-learning tools and techniques.
