A Persistent Nature: An ImagineEarth Art Exhibition Hosted With Poplar Grove
Nature and art are borne of persistence. Both involve tireless experimentation, iteration and growth. “A Persistent Nature” considers this commonality through works from climate-focused artists who are persevering amid a D.C. community undergoing change and volatility. In persisting, these creators prompt visitors to interrogate how they can practice their own versions of persistence for the benefit of the environment – whether that be through nature-based solutions, policy and advocacy, or climate innovation and technology.
A one-night, pop-up exhibition helping to catalyze action during D.C. Climate Week, “A Persistent Nature” is curated by ImagineEarth Collective, a DC-based group of creatives who imagine better futures for our planet. We present works as a vehicle for change, discussion and community around environmental topics and are composed of individuals from many different perspectives and areas of expertise, including scientists, researchers, and communications specialists. We are thrilled to co-host this exhibition with Poplar Grove, one of DC’s healthiest houses and an architectural embodiment of persistence. Built with materials like tulip poplar bark, cork, and sheep’s wool, the house was willed into existence during COVID by BLDUS. It draws enduring inspiration from Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, while honoring the legacy of those who built Poplar Forest and examining Jefferson’s complex moral history. The alley where Poplar Grove stands is named after Adelaide Johnson, a prominent sculptor of the suffrage movement.
We look forward to welcoming you to an exhibition imbued with the nature of persistence – all the way from the art on display to the walls of the space itself.
