About the speakers:
Dr. John Collins is a distinguished leader in healthcare innovation and currently serves as Director of Innovation Platforms at CIMIT (Consortia for Improving Medicine with Innovation and Technology), based at Massachusetts General Hospital. With over four decades of international experience in technology-driven enterprises, Dr. Collins has dedicated his career to advancing medical innovation and improving patient care. At CIMIT, Dr. Collins has been instrumental in launching key initiatives like CoLab, GAITS, and the CRAASH program, which foster collaboration between clinicians, researchers, and entrepreneurs. A holder of over 20 U.S. patents and a frequent speaker, he is committed to mentoring the next generation of medical innovators and promoting inclusive innovation across the healthcare ecosystem.
Pekka Simula is the Managing Partner of Innovestor Life Science, a €90 million venture capital fund investing in health and life science startups in the New Nordics. Previously a startup founder and operator, Pekka serves as Chairperson or Board Member at several health tech and life science companies, including HVR Cardio, Soihtu DTx, Kasvu Therapeutics, and Gesynta Pharma.
Matti Hautsalo is a Partner and one of the founders of Nordic Science Investments (NSI). Since 2006, he has worked with early-stage technology companies through venture capital and a private investment company, focusing on research-based spinouts in North America, the UK, and Finland. Much of his work has involved a hands-on board member, linking startups with Nordic R&D teams and their international management and shareholder networks. Matti’s earlier investments and directorships related to health care and Life sciences include whole body MRI (Prenuvo), cancer immunotherapy (Valo Therapeutics), quantum chemistry (Algorithmiq), live cell analysis (CM Technologies), and health care ERP (Commit). With the NSI team, Matti has been building an early-stage portfolio with 10 life sciences and health tech investments in Finland and Sweden, following the Estonian early-stage deal flow, too.
Kaari Kink serves as Chair at EstVCA and helps scale dual-use innovation capacity across the Alliance through NATO DIANA. She is also a previous startup operator at Triumf Health and KOOS, and an investor at Superangel, where she focused on building a strong presence and networks in the Baltics and Nordics. During the 4 years at Superangel, she led several noteworthy ecosystem initiatives that have brought international capital and talent closer to the Estonian market. She has an extensive European network of investors and close access to market information. She also has a 360-degree overview and access to the Estonian ecosystem, from junior to senior VC operators to governmental bodies, universities, and incubators.
