About Event

We would like to welcome you to the next installment of the Salon of the California Institute of Machine Consciousness!

Animism is a metaphysical perspective that emphasizes how the agency of the living universe is brought about by self organizing sentience. How does control software form in nature, and give rise to organisms, ecosystems and human society? Haiyao Miyazaki's latest feature length film "The Boy and the Heron" (君たちはどう生きるか, Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka: 'How Do You Live?') combines biographical, eudaimonic and fantastic elements with a fascinating exploration of animist concepts.

Haiyao Miyazaki is the most significant humanist philosopher of our time. He publishes his insights and ideas almost inclusively in movies, where they are woven into multiple layers of narrative, typically addressing different parts of the audience in distinct ways. "Boy and the Heron" may be Miyazaki's least accessible but also his metaphysically deepest movie, with surprising references to Artificial Intelligence.

Joscha Bach will give a brief introduction, and organize the discussion of the movie afterwards.

We are looking forward to connecting with you!
