Parrot Q&A #8: Courting Coincidence | with Pascal Hachem
How Can Chance and Trust Shape Artistic Practice?
What happens when artists embrace unpredictability? And why might trust can be an artist’s greatest asset?
Join us for a conversation with Beirut-based artist Pascal Hachem, as he shares his approach to involving displacing actions in artistic practice. In conversation with Kevin Andrew Heslop, they will reflect on how trust and chance inform creative process — and what gets lost when we rely too heavily on control or preconception.
After the Q&A session, participants will have the optional opportunity to take part in a hands-on exercise, created by Pascal and inspired by his working methods. (It’s a relaxed invitation, only if you feel like joining.)
Limited spots available.
About the Speaker
Pascal Hachem (b.1979) Visual Artist and Performer based in Beirut, Lebanon. His work involves displacing actions. They are real actions, not videos, performed either by the artist himself or by objects that he sets up.
He is inspired by aspects of everyday life in the city, which tend to contextualise his way of thinking so that they influence his work in an unconscious way that he cannot escape. He does not impose any set of rules upon himself, but rather is prompted by nothing but a single impressionable moment, to produce. As a result, he has a varied catalogue of work using various mediums, including his own body and elements and forms of everyday life.
About the Session
In this Q&A, Pascal Hachem and Kevin Andrew Heslop will discuss the artist’s process and recent work, while reflecting on key questions:
– How does remaining open to chance benefit artists?
– What possibilities do preconceptions obscure?
– Why is trust an artist’s greatest asset?
+ Workshop for Everyone
Following the Q&A, Pascal will lead a 15-minute exercise exploring how everyday household objects can be repurposed for artistic effect. No special materials or preparation needed—just curiosity and something within reach.
