Contempt (1963)
REM is a film club for filmmakers. Twice a month, we screen a film, discuss it—sometimes with the artists behind it—and unwind with snacks and drinks. Our programming is split into arcs that focus on a specific aspect of filmmaking. We’re starting meta: our first arc is Films about Filmmaking.
Next up is Contempt (1963), Godard’s stylish and sharp take on art, ambition, and love on the rocks. Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli, and Jack Palance star in this story of a screenwriter caught between his distant wife, a pushy American producer, and legendary director Fritz Lang (playing himself) as they wrestle with adapting The Odyssey. With bold visuals, Hollywood-meets-European-cool energy, and a killer soundtrack, Contempt is one of Godard’s most striking and unforgettable films.
