Noticing: Scandinavian History of Sunset Park
Duration: 2–3 hrs | Distance: 2 miles
Noticing is not just a series of group walks, but an exchange with the city we call home.
Each walk is loosely focused on one theme and encourages attendees to develop a deeper awareness of their surroundings, learn about local history, and even make new friends. Be prepared to look around, pay attention, and discuss your findings.
This walk will be dedicated to exploring the Scandinavian history of Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The neighborhood is home to one of the largest Chinese populations in the city, but did you know Sunset Park was once home to thousands of Scandinavian immigrants? Much of the population has left in the later half of the 20th century, but traces of their history remain. Using 8th Avenue (once known as Lapskaus Boulevard after a Norwegian stew) as our roadmap we will uncover this history of Scandinavian immigration and various points of interest.
Cameras, field recorders, notebooks, pencils, portable scanners, etc. are encouraged, but not required. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and bring plenty of water!
