About Event

Unpacking Patents, Copyright Authorship and Contributions

This seminar will explore the nuanced distinctions between patent inventorship and how it compares to paper authorship; copyright authorship and contributions, and more. The session will provide real world examples and a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be an inventor versus a contributor in various contexts, as well as how these distinctions apply to academic, research, and commercial environments.

This seminar is for university faculty, researchers, post docs and graduate students, and anyone interested in the protection of intellectual property.

Speakers

Lawrence Villanueva, JD, PhD
Partner, Thomas Horstemeyer

Larry Villanueva is a member of the Thomas Horstemeyer's chemical and biotechnological patent prosecution sections. Larry has over 28 years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications primarily in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnological fields. Larry’s clients include large corporations, research universities and institutions, as well as medium-sized companies. With technical degrees in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry, Larry is able to serve his clients in a wide range of technologies including pharmaceuticals, polymers and material chemistry, catalysts, and drug delivery devices. Larry works hand-in-hand with clients to align their intellectual property with their business goals in order to maximize the value of their intellectual property. In addition to patent prosecution, Larry counsels clients regarding IP due diligence as well as provide opinions relating to freedom to operate and validity/invalidity.

Charles W. Griggers, JD
Partner, Thomas Horstemeyer

Charles W. Griggers practices in all aspects of intellectual property, including preparation and prosecution in patents, trademarks, and copyrights. He also provides services such as post-grant patent proceedings; rendering of legal opinions; and assisting in litigation matters. Charles has patent prosecution experience in a wide range of fields, including electrical, optical, mechanical, electromechanical, medical devices, semiconductor materials, and computer technologies.  Due to Charles’s technical education and background, he effectively identifies ways to obtain deliver the strongest intellectual property solution. He is well versed in a wide variety of technologies and assists clients in obtaining intellectual property both domestically and abroad. Charles works with clients of all sizes including universities, corporations, individual inventors, and internationally-based businesses.
