The Romantic Reaction: IndieThinker's Workshop
IndieThinkers invites you to join us for an interactive 2-hour workshop on the concept and influence of the Romantic reaction, hosted by Timothy Wilcox. Timothy has a Ph.D. in English and draws connections through our literary past, present, and future on his blog PreCursor Poets.
IndieThinkers' workshops are designed to significantly and efficiently improve your command of essential ideas in intellectual history.
A workshop combines: One crucial and challenging text, which you're required to read in advance
One 2-hour meeting, composed of a short lecture and extended group discussion
Please read Chapter V: "The Romantic Reaction" from the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead's book Science and the Modern World, in which he gives special attention to the poets William Wordsworth and Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Accompanying Whitehead's account of the rebellious impact of the poetry, please read two poems as well: "Tintern Abbey" and "Mont Blanc" by Wordsworth and Shelley respectively.
The poems are relatively long, so plan to set aside at least 15 minutes for each, plus at least half an hour for the Whitehead excerpt.
You should plan to read these carefully in the week leading up to the event.
We strongly encourage participants to take notes and come to the workshop with ideas, hypotheses, or at the very least questions.
Whitehead's book may be accessed online, such as through http://Archive.org (with a free account):
The poems can be read online as well:
Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour. July 13, 1798 by William Wordsworth
You're very likely to meet other interesting people working on projects related to the theme of the workshop. The IndieThinkers community includes authors, academics and post-academics, bloggers, Youtubers, podcasters, engineers, and startup founders.
