Interested in learning something new and teaching others?
One of the greatest things to witness is when you see your child start pedalling for the first time. Imagine if you could learn how to do that so you can have that magical moment. Once they've started riding, wouldn't it be amazing if you could ride along with them. But, how? You've got the questions. We've got the answers.
What is SNAKES!?
A chance for parents and children to learn to ride together. A snake is what we call a group of riders made up of a head- a qualified cycling instructor and a tail- everyone else.
Schedule:
◦ 9.00-9.30: Parent briefing, children assessment
The first 15-30 mins are a briefing for adults and assessment for children. Each rider needs to be able to have good control of their cycle before heading off. If you plan on carrying your child in a seat- cargo or carrier, this will also be inspected to ensure it's suitable.
◦ 9.30-10.00: Group Practice
Then it's time for some practice in a group led by an instructor to make sure everyone feels comfortable then away you go!
◦ 10.00-10.45: Group Ride
Each ride typically last 30-60 mins and follows a planned route. During the ride, the instructors will offer advice and look after everyone.
◦ 10.45-11.00: Debrief
When you make it back, there will be chance for questions and feedback then you're on your own and you can even go for another ride!
What you need:
We give you the skills but you need to provide your own equipment. Please check your cycle has:
A- air in the tyres so they feel firm
B- brakes that stop both wheels
C- the chain moves smoothly
D- the handlebars don't move independently of the front wheel when you try to change direction
Please be aware that any adjustments may cause delays for you and others. If you know there's a problem then please get your child's bike checked over before you arrive.
What is ANTS!?
An opportunity for every parent to experience what it's like when your child rides their bike for the first time. Ants are what we call a group of riders who ride around trying to balance.
Schedule:
9.00-9.15: Parent briefing, children warm-up
In the first 15 mins you'll cover the basics of balance, the do's and don't's of supporting and the levels of progression. While adults are learning, an instructor will keep your children busy so they're ready to learn when you return!
9.15-9.45: Group practice
The next half an hour is your chance to instruct your child and facilitate their practice! Instructors will be on hand to offer support if you need it but this is the rider's first chance to get to grips with pedalling.
9.45-10.00: Parent troubleshooting, children break
All that learning is hard work so children get to take a break while the adults come together to discuss any issues they're facing and how to solve them. Instructors have seen it all so they are there to to offer their professional feedback.
10.00-10.45: Individual practice and games
Depending on your child's progress, this is where most children will pick it up, however, instructors will be on hand to address any individual issues.
10.45-11.00: Debrief
Regardless of progress, all riders will receive a huge congratulations! Parents will have the chance to ask questions and receive feedback.
What you need:
We provide the knowhow and the space but you need to provide a bike without stabilisers for your child. Make sure it's an appropriate size- children able to sit with feet flat on the floor and in good working order. If instructors need to make adjustments during the session then this will result in delays for you and others so please get your child's bike checked beforehand if in doubt.
Bringing your child is optional but encouraged but we understand if you want to teach them away from distractions. There's plenty to learn by listening and watching others to take away with you.
