World Cafe: From Storybooks to Ocean Action
Dive into the intersection of storytelling, art, and ocean conservation! This World Cafe dialogue will guide us to explore the illustrated children’s book Song of Whale—a tale of a whale queen’s song and a child’s awakening to marine protection.
Through rotating small group discussions, followed by collaborative brainstorming, participants will:
Be able to leverage the book’s rich visuals, share their own experiences, and build on each other’s ideas to teach science concepts (marine ecosystems, animal communication) and social-emotional learning (empathy, advocacy).
Brainstorm actionable projects linking the story to real-world conservation (e.g., student-led beach cleanups, "whale song" music lessons, eco-art installations).
Help us brainstorm ideas for Ocean Literacy Learning Kits! Your suggestions—along with the book—could be used for storytelling sessions with coastal kids in the Philippines.

☕ What is World Cafe?
World Cafe is a discussion format driven by intentionally crafted questions, designed for 12 or more people to Think Together. 🌎☕️
In the process, participants are divided into small groups to discuss a question, and then join a new group to discuss the next one.
There will be three rounds, each 15 to 20 minutes.
After that, everyone comes together to share what they learned. We'll be able to take home the main ideas, themes, and insights that emerged from the discussions.
