Book Club: The Old Man and The Sea
Finally a book club for writers.
Each month we’ll be reading either:
A non-fiction book designed to help us become better writers. Books like: On Writing Well, Elements of Eloquence, The Artists Way, Big Magic.
Or
We’ll be reading an absolute classic, books like: The Sun Also Rises, A Handmaids Tale, East of Eden, or Jane Eyre. Books that we all can learn a thing or two from.
The Old Man and the Sea
Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea follows Santiago, an aging fisherman who hooks the biggest catch of his life—and spends days fighting to bring it home. On the surface, it’s a simple story about a man and a fish. But underneath, it’s about resilience, failure, pride, and what it means to keep going when no one’s watching.
How this book will make you a better writer:
Learn how to write with precision and clarity.
Build suspense using repetition and structure.
Show internal conflict without over-explaining.
Turn a small plot into a meaningful narrative.
Balance action with introspection.
This book is short, but it does a lot with a little. If you want to practice writing tighter prose with stronger impact—this one’s for you.
