Dunoon Site Visit – Housing, Waste, and Mobility Planning
As part of Design Week South Africa, join us on Friday, 25th October, for a site visit to Dunoon, one of Cape Town’s rapidly evolving urban areas. This excursion will begin at the Civic Centre in the CBD, where we will take a MyCiTi bus (do not worry if you do not have a MyCiTi card, we got you) to Dunoon, providing a firsthand look at how public transport connects the city's centre to its less formal, fast-growing areas.
The site visit will be led by Liezel Kruger-Fountain and her team from the Urban Sustainability Unit in the Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate, who will guide us through critical aspects of planning for Dunoon, including housing, waste management, and mobility infrastructure.
The visit, hosted from the international award winning Dunoon Library, is designed to inspire and inform urban planners, architects, policymakers, and anyone interested in the challenges of sustainable urban growth and development. It’s an opportunity to explore Dunoon’s current landscape while gaining insights into potential future improvements in integrating infrastructure, community spaces, and resource management.
Who can come?
This event is open to anyone interested in urban development, sustainability, and mobility solutions. It is particularly valuable for architects, planners, policymakers, and students seeking insight into the challenges faced by rapidly expanding townships and the innovative approaches being implemented to address them.
What to bring?
Comfortable clothing and shoes for walking from the bus stop to the library
A notebook or device for taking notes
Water and snacks
Curiosity and openness to engage with real-world urban challenges
Your warmest smile, remember we’re visiting fellow citizens at their home so let’s show appreciation as we’re coming to learn from this amazingly resilient community.
What will you do?
You’ll start the day by travelling from the Civic Centre in the CBD to Dunoon via MyCiTi, experiencing the transport infrastructure firsthand. Upon arrival, you’ll participate in a guided site visit led by Liezel Kruger-Fountain, followed by an interactive workshop focusing on rapid urbanisation, placemaking, critical infrastructure and mobility. The workshop will include discussions on current challenges and opportunities in the area, with space for brainstorming and collaborative problem-solving.
Will it be safe?
Yes, very. But as always, be vigilant and use that smile of yours!
