About Event

The magistrates’ courts of England and Wales are little observed and rarely reported on. Transform Justice sought to change this with CourtWatch London, a new mass court observation programme where volunteer members of the public observed the daily hearings in court and reported what they saw.

From July to December 2023, 83 volunteer courtwatchers observed over 1,000 hearings in London’s magistrates courts. Join us for the launch of the report on what they saw.

Can public observers understand how to access the courts? Are defendants able to participate effectively? Do courts make fair and high quality decisions? How well do the courts run? How are young adults treated by the magistrates' courts? At this evening of presentations, panel discussion and networking, hear what volunteer courtwatchers thought about these questions and more.
