Regenerative Design & Upcycling Workshop with Mahdiyyah Muhammad
It’s time to get creative!💡Whether you’re a sustainable fashion professional looking to deepen your knowledge about circular practices, a designer looking to learn more sustainable production methods, or a conscious fashion enthusiast looking to learn a new skill and connect with like-minded people — this transformative regenerative design workshop is for you.
🧶 Mahdiyyah Muhammad — also known as the Fabric Alchemist — is a circular fashion educator, upcycle textile designer, and textile waste operations strategist with over 10 years of experience in the fashion industry. Her skill of patchworking discarded scraps mirrors the regenerative design, master quilting, and pioneering upcycling skills of her African ancestors.
(Note: this event is free for CFC Members. If you're a member, RSVP here.)
♻️ WHAT YOU WILL GAIN:
Research-based knowledge about the impact of outdated textile systems on human and environmental health.
Proven methods to apply this information in real-time to workspaces, communities, and creative practices.
Knowledge-building about the historically Black and Indigenous ancestral origins of sustainability and upcycling.
A deeper understanding of mechanical and chemical textile recycling processes.
A hands-on slow fashion experience as we use regenerative upcycling skills to create an artwork from textile waste.
🧵 HOW IT WILL WORK:
The workshop will be split into two parts:
For the first 30 minutes, we’ll focus on education. You’ll learn about the impacts of outdated textile systems, the history of upcycling, how textile recycling works, and how to apply this information in your workplaces.
In the rest of the workshop, you’ll apply this information to a hands-on upcycled textile art project, which uses ancestral methods like mechanical recycling, upcycling, and regenerative design to re-imagine the use of textile waste.
🪡 WHAT MATERIALS WILL YOU NEED?
