Beki, Bakla, Babae: Rewriting our Narratives as Filipinx/a/os Through Art & Calligraphy
Beki, Bakla, Babae will unpack the intricate history of evolving gender dynamics in the Philippines, including queer and trans resistance and women’s rights during colonial periods and ongoing imperial regimes. Through brush calligraphy, participants will explore the multifaceted experiences of bekis, baklas, and bababes and critically analyze their role in shaping the gender discourse in Philippine society.
Our intentions for this workshop is to:
Unpack historical context: Explore and unpack the historical and cultural context of queer, trans, and women's rights and resistance in the Philippines, examining derogatory words throughout history.
Empower critical dialogue: Facilitate critical discussions about the evolving roles of women and queer and trans people in the Philippines, addressing challenges, stereotypes, the role of colonialism, imperialism and the patriarchy.
Express through art: Harness the creative potential of brush calligraphy as a medium to visually articulate perspectives, learnings, and narratives concerning queer, trans, and women's rights and resistance.
This workshop will be facilitated by Pinay Collection and Makulay Atbp. in partnership with Centre Kapwa. Jovie Galit, artist and founder of Pinay Collection will lead us through the art of brush calligraphy. Calligraphy worksheet and pens will be provided.
All are welcome, regardless if you are Filipino, beki, bakla, or babae (queer or woman)!
Masks are encouraged, and extra masks will be available on site. The event venue at Concordia University is physically accessible with gender neutral washrooms.
