About the Fellowships

The RBC Borealis PhD Fellowship program has been designed to help exceptional domestic and international students achieve their goals as they pursue a degree at a Canadian university in machine learning (ML) or artificial intelligence (AI). Each year, we award a number of fellowships to outstanding students, who wish to pursue graduate-level degrees in these fields.

Keynote Abstract:

Large language models can make unsupported claims, often called “hallucinations", but what about other issues? In this talk, Jackie Cheung asks how we can anticipate and mitigate potential issues with NLG systems. He will discuss his work in systematically surveying the recent literature on automatic summarization as a study of how researchers discuss responsible AI issues. Next, he will present the authors efforts to encourage more structured reflection of evaluation practices with a novel framework, Evidence-Centred Benchmark Design, inspired by work in educational assessment.

Speaker Bio:

Jackie Chi Kit Cheung is an associate professor at McGill University's School of Computer Science, where he co-directs the Reasoning and Learning Lab. He is a Canada CIFAR AI Chair and an Associate Scientific Co-Director at the Mila Quebec AI Institute. His research focuses on topics in natural language generation such as automatic summarization, and on integrating diverse knowledge sources into NLP systems for pragmatic and common-sense reasoning. He also works on applications of NLP to domains such as education, health, and language revitalization. He is motivated in particular by how the structure of the world can be reflected in the structure of language processing systems.
