About Event

About Labs2Zero:

2023 and 2024 have set records as the two hottest years in recorded history with multiple climate fueled natural disasters, underscoring the urgent need for action on climate change. In response to the considerable emissions generated by laboratories, I2SL launched the Labs2Zero initiative in 2022. This program is the largest effort in I2SL’s history with a goal of accelerating the decarbonization of the world’s laboratories. It is supported by over 30 sponsors and involves the collaborative efforts of over 100 lab experts and advisors.

This presentation will provide an update on the new tools and capabilities released in 2023 by the Labs2Zero program, such as the new Energy and Operational Emissions Scorecard and a first-of-its-kind Embodied Carbon Benchmarking capability. A preview will also be given on the upcoming Labs2Zero Actionable Insights and Measures (AIM) Report. This pioneering resource will deliver high level, automated energy assessment reports for lab buildings. It will use facility and utility data to calculate estimates of recommended energy efficiency measure costs and savings, as well as provide a list of relevant case studies.

Presenter Bio:

Gordon Sharp is the President of I2SL, a non-profit organization dedicated to decarbonizing and making the world’s laboratories more sustainable. Gordon is also the inventor of many important, widely applied technologies that have had a significant impact on lab sustainability and energy efficiency such as the sash sensing variable volume fume hood, laboratory airflow controls, the electronic venturi airflow valve, and demand based control of lab ventilation. He is also the founder of two major companies in the lab controls and sustainability field: Phoenix Controls, and Aircuity. The many technologies invented by Gordon are today saving well over $2.5 billion annually in energy use and over 7.5 million metric tons annually in carbon emissions from thousands of commercial and laboratory facilities around the world.

Gordon is also an MIT graduate with over 35 patents covering energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and laboratory controls. He is an ASHRAE Fellow, and a former ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer and has contributed to many laboratory and healthcare ventilation standards.
