About Event

Join Us for Hack the Town 2025 (HTH x Oakland Technology and Education Center)
Two unforgettable days of creativity, coding, and community.

Are you a young person with big ideas and a passion for tech? Come build something amazing at Hack the Town 2025! In partnership with Google Play, we’re bringing together youth coders ages 15–25 to develop mobile apps focused on social justice and community impact.

Whether you’re a seasoned coder or just starting out, you’ll be part of a supportive environment with mentorship, collaboration, and cash prizes!


The Challenge
On Day 1, you’ll be placed on a team. Your mission: design and prototype a mobile app with a focus on community and social justice.

Need inspiration? Here are a few themes to get you started:

  • HealthTech: Mobility, environment, fitness, nutrition

  • EdTech: Adaptive learning, online training platforms


Prizes

  • Winning Team: $1,800 cash prize + opportunity to publish your app on Google Play

  • Runner-Up Team: $150 cash prize


Schedule
Day 1: Friday, August 1, 2025 from 10AM - 6PM
Day 2: Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 10AM - 2PM

How to Prepare

  • Bring a computer and power cord

  • Use any mobile development platform you like (e.g., Unity, Flutter, Mobile Angular UI)

  • New to coding? No problem! Try App Inventor — it’s beginner-friendly and was used by many teams last year

  • Come ready to learn, collaborate, and have fun

Hack the Hood (HtH) provides underestimated youth and young adults with tech skill-building programs and career navigation support that is grounded in justice and supports economic mobility.

We encourage participation from youth ages 15–25 who identify as Black, Latinx, AAPI, or Indigenous—or anyone excited to use tech to make a difference.
