Tie Dye: Shibori Technique
In this workshop we'll explore Shibori—a traditional Japanese resist technique that uses true indigo dyes—and play with various resists to create dynamic patterns we'll reveal at the end of our workshop.
“Shibori” derives from the Japanese verb shiboru, “to wring, squeeze, press.” The closest English translation would be “shaped-resist dyeing.” The shaping process reserves areas that are recorded as patterns with characteristically soft edges and crinkled textures when cloth is dyed. Rather than treating cloth as a two-dimensional flat surface, shibori techniques give it a three-dimensional form by folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting, or plucking and twisting. Cloth may be drawn up and bound, stitched and gathered, pleated and bound, folded and clamped between boards, or wrapped around a pole then pushed along it to compress the fabric into folds.
We will provide:
Your choice of 1 yard of fabric OR a finished clothing item from our supply AND a cotton bandana
Rubber bands + resists to tie up your fabric
All the necessary gloves and aprons to protect yourself while you dye (but remember, accidents happen!)
Instructions on how to wash/care for your newly dyed items.
Safety Reminders:
We'll be working with non-toxic dye, but it does stain clothes and skin. Please wear dark clothes. We will provide gloves.
