02/14 UPDATE: This event has been moved to February 27th.

Hello NGS IEG members!

This February 27th, we will be hosting 2 speakers from Zifo, Doctors Mohamed Kassam and Agniruudrra R Sinha! With a focus on foundation models like scGPT, our presenters will be discussing the strengths and limitations of AI-driven and traditional statistical methods in multi-omics data integration 🤖🦾. Please see the following information below:

Title: Next-Generation Multi-Omics: Foundation Models as Catalysts for Discovery

Abstract: Next generation omics is an ever-growing field, encompassing various domains like RNA, DNA, proteins.  It includes capturing expression patterns, relationships and how they correlate to disease, aging and bodily mechanisms. In recent times, with the advent of high-performance computing, powerful data models, GPU architecture and a sophistry of instruments, transcriptomics has grown to encompass a wide variety of data modalities including proteins, chromatin, spatial coordinates etc.  Each of these modalities provide unique insights into biological processes. For instance, chromatin studies can reveal the effects of aging, while spatially resolved tissues allow for the examination of gene expression within specific organs. These diverse data types present distinct challenges in handling and processing. However, to extract comprehensive information, these disparate data modalities must be integrated, necessitating innovative approaches for both processing and combining these complex datasets. Foundation models have emerged as powerful catalysts for discovery in this multiomics space. These models, pre-trained on large-scale datasets and can capture complex gene-gene and gene-cell interactions, offer a more nuanced understanding of biological systems.

Presenter’s bio: At Zifo, we used foundation models like scGPT  for  multi-omics data integration and compared it with traditional methods such as MOFA. By comparing these two approaches, we assessed the strengths and limitations of AI-driven and traditional statistical methods in multi-omics data integration, providing valuable insights for researchers in computational biology.

  • The NextGen Sequencing Intellectual Exchange Group (NGS IEG) provides a forum to share methods and technologies driving biotechnology research in North Carolina from both academic and private research groups. NGS IEG provides an excellent networking opportunity for biotech leaders, academics, and students interested in networking with local RTP biotech. We gather industry leaders from the RTP area to share, discuss and review their new technologies, research, and big-data platforms in a casual environment with lunch provided.
