AI Policy Reading Group 3: The Role of Scientists in AI Policy
Join us this week as we examine the evolving discourse around AI governance through recent developments. We'll analyze the tension between the vague risk and safety narrative maintained by advocates for the current AI race dynamics and calls for international cooperation and science-based policy highlighted in the 2024 Final Report of the UN High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence.
Our discussion will explore how these competing narratives shape the role of scientists and researchers in AI governance, from technical expertise to policy advocacy.
We'll examine this through the lens of the recently released 2025 First International Report on AI Safety chaired by Yoshua Bengio, considering the challenges and opportunities for meaningful expertise exchange and cooperation across economic, social, political, and technical sectors.
Drinks and Snacks will be provided!
