619 - Seattle Juneteenth - Meet Us On The Yard
On Thursday June 19th, 2025, The Union activates the spring/summer outdoor commUnity events series concept known as “The Yard”.
Hosted in the plaza of a downtown skyscraper, these daytime community events have the vibe of an HBCU styled homecoming gathering. The Union’s history of empowering community, commerce, creativity, and culture in the heart of downtown Seattle for people of African descent is celebrated yearly as our business anniversary falls on Juneteenth; founded on that day in 2018.
A Celebration of Economic Freedom
In cooperation with our community, alliance, and ecosystem partners, PACE is producing the first of its kind Juneteenth Celebration downtown Seattle. This event is located in the plaza of the 1201 Building on Second Ave. (between University and Seneca) which also houses The Union Seattle (known as The Union).
This public event will partially close Second Ave. between University St. and Seneca St. to create a block-party styled HBCU themed community event called "THE YARD".
THE UNION & YARD
In the context of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (known as HBCUs), where you find a Union, you'll usually find a Yard. These colloquialisms are etched into the hearts & minds of alumni from these glorious institutions no matter where they find themselves globally.
THE UNION
"The Union" often refers to the central hub on campus where people gather for social, cultural, and academic activities. It serves as a space for fostering community, hosting events, and supporting organizations.
THE YARD
“The Yard” is the open, central green‑space that functions as the campus’s heartbeat. Part town square, part cultural stage, “Meet me on the Yard” quickly became shorthand for where our community connected outdoors.
