About Event

🎫 The event

Join Science Creates in Bristol for a specially crafted event as we begin an exciting, new chapter — preparing to expand by a further 30,000 sq ft with our third state-of-the-art Deep Tech incubator in Bristol, OMX.

To celebrate, we're bringing together a curated crowd of founders, investors, partners, industry experts and ecosystem connectors as we explore what it takes to start and scale a successful Deep Tech venture in the UK.

Throughout the day there will be time for founders and investors to discuss and explore opportunities within our current and future sites.

Please note that there are limited spaces to attend this event. Your registration request will require approval by the hosts; priority will be given to invited attendees and Deep Tech company founders, CXOs and investors working at Seed - Series A. We may need to limit the number of invitees per organisation.

💬 Keynote speaker bios

Dr Andy Heron is the Co-Founder and CEO of Portal Biotech, a growing Oxford-based startup developing next-generation, bench-top nanopore solutions for comprehensive, full–length, single-molecule protein characterisation. Andy was previously a senior member of the Oxford Nanopore Technology team that was responsible for commercialising its range of gene sequencers. Andy has made significant contributions to the field of nanopore technology in the last 15 years, with over 40 patents and multiple publications, and brings this knowledge and experience to bear in accelerating Portal’s new products pipeline. Andy completed post-doc work at the Department of Chemistry, Oxford University and has a PhD in chemical biology from Imperial College, London.

John Williams is a self-taught software engineer turned Deep Tech entrepreneur. As Co-Founder and CTO of Kudan Inc, he pioneered computer-vision based augmented reality in 2011, responsible for some of the most popular apps and games of the era and building the largest full-stack AR developer ecosystem. He was instrumental in pushing early deep learning into computer vision, which in 2014 led to Kudan moving deeper than AR to create Artificial Perception – an advanced form of AI used by autonomous robots and vehicles to understand and interact with the world around them. Kudan enjoyed a spectacular IPO on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2018, going on to exceed a $1bn market cap. John was involved in Kudan’s corporate venture capital and oversaw Kudan’s acquisition of VC-backed Artisense GmbH, a Deep Tech AI spinout from Technical University of Munich. He now continues his deep tech journey as General Partner at SCVC, the official funding arm of Science Creates, where he oversees investments into complex hardware.
