Perspectives on photogrammetry: Making large-area imaging more accessible for marine conservation

Join us for a webinar exploring photogrammetry, an emerging technology in marine conservation that uses a series of overlapping 2D images to reconstruct a high-resolution 3D model of a stationary object or environment. Photogrammetry has multiple potential applications for studying and communicating environmental change over time, yet to date it has not been broadly adopted by conservation practitioners.

Presenter:

Dr. Orion McCarthy -  Science Lead at SeaTrees and Project Manager at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography

What You'll Learn:

  • Applications of large-area imaging for marine science and conservation, with a particular focus on coral reefs

  • Examples of large-scale coral reef monitoring and restoration projects that leverage large-area imagery

  • An overview of several workflows that leverage AI and machine learning for extracting ecological data from large-area imagery

  • A discussion of common barriers to adoption, as well as learnings from capacity building efforts to train practitioners

This webinar offers a unique opportunity to hear from a leading expert who has both used photogrammetry for marine ecology research and helped coral restoration practitioners overcome technical hurdles to be able to use photogrammetry. It is intended for technologists, scientists and practitioners on the ground who might be interested in using large-area imaging for conservation.
