In this Flash Talk, Dean will unveil a compelling analysis of 156 clinical candidates published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry between 2018 and 2021. He will delve into the genesis of these clinical candidates and highlight the most prevalent lead generation strategies. You can expect a deep dive into the structural differences and similarities of hits and clinical candidates with a particular focus on the frequency of key heteroatoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine, chlorine, and sulfur. For an insider's perspective, Dean will zoom in on the three most and least similar hit-to-clinical candidate pairs from random screening, revealing the transformative changes leading to successful clinical candidates.
Dean Brown is currently Senior Vice President and Head of Discovery Sciences at Jnana Therapeutics. Previously he was Director of Chemistry at AstraZeneca within the Hit Discovery Department, Discovery Science, R&D BioPharmaceuticals Unit. He obtained a B.S in chemistry at Abilene Christian University (Abilene, TX) and a Ph.D at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis) in organic chemistry. He has over 25 years of experience in industry in both large pharmaceutical and biotech organizations. Dean has been responsible for building many new scientific programs in neuroscience, infection, and rare diseases, several which have resulted in successful transition to clinical trials. Dean is also the current Perspectives Editor with the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Dean is listed as an author or inventor on more than 80 publications and patent applications in medicinal chemistry and drug design, including granted patents on clinical candidates.
