According to Crunchbase, Black-founded startups in the United States received $705 million in venture capital (VC) funding in 2023, which is a 71% drop from the previous year and barely scratching the surface (0.5%) of the colossal $140.4 billion VC pot feeding all U.S.-based startups last year. This is the first time since 2016 that the amount of funding fell below $1 billion. In 2021, VC investments in Black-owned startups were almost $5 billion, but that number dropped to $2.4 billion in 2022.
Latinx founders received around 2% of total venture capital funding during the past 2 years. Women of color, including Black and Latinx women, receive an even smaller share, often less than 1% of total venture capital funding.
