About Event

Hi hi!

I'm turning 40 in 6 months, and on the horizon is July 13, or HTML Day. In the same spirit as HTML freewrites, I wanted to do something with friends who are in different parts of the world, so I propose a weeklong HTML webzine-making marathon!

The question I want to ask is, how are we all connected? From what's happening in Palestine, Congo, Sudan, Turtle Island, the Philippines, and everywhere else. How do we show up for ourselves and how do we show up for one another? What message would you like to convey to a complete stranger? How can we give each other hope?

These are some of the things I've been thinking about, conversations I want to have with people but have been afraid or unable to do so. In a way, I want to relay my feelings through this medium. To hopefully reach, from me to you, to anyone and everyone. Perhaps you'd like to do the same.

With your permission, at the end of this marathon on 29 June, the zines will be uploaded to w-w-w.works. If you don't feel comfortable exhibiting your work, that's totally okay and you can keep or share your work with whomever or wherever you wish.

If you don't know HTML, or need ideas or have questions, I'll have Office Hours everyday from 22 June to 29 June 18:00-21:00 EDT. I'm also making some short-form tutorials as well as starter templates over the next few days for those who need a crash course on writing HTML, about webzines in general, as well as examples of what's out there, and what could be possible! It can be as simple as a bunch of links, or a bunch of images and text. This is also what a webzine could look like.

Also, you do not have to spend a certain number of hours on this; just do it at your own pace. Can be as short as a few minutes to a couple of hours! Low stakes, no commitment. :)

Nothing needs to be complete, perfect, or pretty. The goal is to have fun, learn something new, make art about things you care about, asynchronously with others in this world wide web (hence a "wide area network"; taken from the concept of LAN parties).

You can sign up here for Office Hours! If you have any more suggestions on what you think could be helpful or useful before kickoff, let me know!
