The story of this event and the fund

The Russian war on Ukraine has brought unspeakable horrors and destruction. A country with a rich culture dating back thousands of years, Ukraine's global contribution to music is immense and now its musicians and their families are on the brink of survival with their livelihoods destroyed. Most are separated from their families across the border, others are sheltering in basements, and all of them in need of our assistance.

When the war broke out, Ukrainian-American violist Alexander Vavilov immediately reached out to the members of the Ukrainian musical community, as many of his musician friends and families were still there. He was met with pleas for help and stories of sheer desperation this war has wrought on a community now in need of food, shelter, medical assistance, and financial support to preserve and sustain their ability to make music now and into the future.

Alexander, in collaboration with the King Baudouin Foundation United States (KBFUS) and the Lisa Batiashvili Foundation (LBF) in Germany, started the Relief Fund for Ukrainian Musicians to collect contributions to support humanitarian assistance for Ukrainian musicians and their families.

Alexander is a member of the Sheffield Chamber players, a rising group on the regional classical music scene, founded in 2014 on the belief that experiencing chamber music in the intimate settings for which it was written profoundly changes the way listeners respond to music, and to each other.

The Sheffield Chamber players will be playing a benefit concert for the Relief Fund for Ukrainian Musicians at Beacon Hill Friends House in downtown Boston, Massachusetts.
