SHOW: Musicals: The Musical Improvised Musical at Baltimore Improv Group
Introducing a fully improvised musical decided by the crowd's vote!
Look behind the scenes of our fictional "musical writing workshop". Guided by a group of "famous" composers and writers, Musicals: The Musical takes several of your mismatched genre and character suggestions and transforms into a huge opening musical numbers. Every lyric, melody, ensemble dance number, and even piano accompaniment is created on the fly.
You, our audience of "producers", vote for which one gets "produced" by the end of the show!
See each pitch session and offer your input with audience questions. After the vote, you'll see the whole story as a "revised" full improvised musical spectacular, complete with heroes, villains, and a big finale. Every show is a world premiere!
Ever wondered what would happen if a courtroom drama was all about a sorority or if a Western featured ballerinas? In this show, you’ll find out!
After the free 7pm show, stay for another free show at 8pm. For the full schedule of the night, visit https://www.bigimprov.org/shows.
This show is part of THE LAB, Baltimore Improv Group's experimental hour.
ABOUT BALTIMORE MUSICAL IMPROV
At Baltimore Musical Improv, we create improvised songs and musicals filled with improvised songs that come to life on the spot. Each show and workshop is different because everything is made up on the fly. We start with a word from the audience, and from there, our team jump into creating a whole new story, with brand-new characters and scenes. It’s a musical adventure that’s completely unscripted!
We’re a nonprofit group supported by Fractured Atlas, and our mission is to bring the joy of improvised musicals to the Baltimore community. We believe anyone can join in and be part of this unique, creative experience—no singing or acting skills required to start!
Our Mission and Community
Every person who joins us helps make our group special, and we’re excited to grow together. We’re all about bringing improvised musicals to Baltimore and building a community around it. We hope to have more musical improv teams performing regularly, along with regularly scheduled shows that bring improvised songs and stories to audiences all over the city. We partner with groups like Highwire Improv and the Baltimore Improv Group to help them offer more musical classes, workshops, and shows.
What Is an Improvised Musical?
An improvised musical is just like a regular musical, but every song, scene, and character is made up right there on stage. When you come to one of our shows, you’ll see performers create full songs and tell a story—all without a script. We start with a single word from the audience and then dive right into making it all up, including improvised songs that fit the scene. Each musical is one-of-a-kind, so you’ll never see the same show twice.
What Will I See at a Show?
At our shows, you’ll watch as we build an improvised musical from scratch. We take one word from the audience to get started, and then we make up everything—characters, conflicts, resolutions, and, of course, improvised songs. The story might have heroes, villains, friendships, and surprises, and it all unfolds right before your eyes. The songs are completely original and made up, and they bring the whole musical to life!
Is It Really Improvised?
Yes! It’s all completely improvised. Nothing is planned ahead of time. Every line, every scene, and every song is made up on the spot. We love the challenge of making it all work together, and the audience’s suggestion helps guide us. Because it’s all created through improv, each musical show is unique, with improvised songs you’ll only hear once. It’s all about creativity, teamwork, and embracing the unexpected.
Why Do People Love Musical Improv?
People love musical improv because it’s a fun and exciting way to create something new. Anyone can do it—no experience needed. You get to play, sing, and be part of a team while learning to think quickly and go with the flow. Plus, it’s a chance to make new friends and build confidence in a supportive space. Musical improv helps you learn to trust yourself and others while you create something amazing together.
