Dr. Josie Zayner is a genetic designer, with a PhD in Biophysics from the University of Chicago and a past life engineering microbes for Mars at NASA. Josie left institutional science to do something more meaningful: Make genetic engineering accessible to everyone. In 2016, she founded The ODIN and built DIY gene editing kits for the masses.

More recently, in 2024, Josie founded The Embryo Corporation, a venture-backed company working to genetically modify animals for agriculture, pets, and xenotransplantation. Somehow, between hacking genomes, pissing off institutions, and launching companies, she also finds time to make art, with work exhibited at San Francisco MoMA, NY MoMA, the Smithsonian, and beyond.

Artist Lucy McRae leads a multi-disciplinary, art-research studio investigating the impact future technologies have on human evolution. In parallel to her gallery and museum-focused art practice she thrives as a director, a maker, in the writer’s room and in the lab.

Boldly staring down the status quo, Lucy pioneers a new story for how future technologies will fundamentally alter intimacy, reproduction, biology and health— shining light on the ethical implications of genetic engineering. Her prophetic aesthetic is flung far from archetypal tropes, creating nostalgia for a future about to happen. Lucy’s work diversifies the predictive voices we traditionally call ‘science’ and ‘technology’, through designing hypothetical worlds that use speculation as a tool to provoke an exploration of ideologies and ethics about who we are, and where we are headed.

Based in Los Angeles, Lucy is a visiting professor at architecture school SCI_Arc, is a World Economic Forum, Young Global Leader and TED Fellow and is currently world building and futurist consultant to a number of Hollywood productions with multiple Oscar-winning directors and producers.

McRae has exhibited at Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou, Science Museum London, Milan Triennale, National Gallery Victoria, Powerhouse Museum, SCI_ARC, MAXXI, NXT Museum, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Design Museum Holon and Honor Fraser Gallery. Collaborations and commissions include MIT, Ars Electronica, NASA, Aesop, Adidas, Nike, Adobe, Intel, Kia, Dezeen, Unilever, Wired Health and BMW Mini. Keynotes at TED, Royal Albert Hall, Cannes Lion and Tribeca Film Festival.
