About Event

Nuestra Palabra celebrates Women's History Month with a powerful book that demonstrates the power of our own voices. The City of Houston is declaring it MALINALLI day, and here is why.

Malinalli is the title of the powerful novel written by Mexican American writer Veronica Chapa.

The book bears the name of Malinalli, which speaks to the indigenous roots of the figure, also called Doña Marina, and extols her heritage, which is native to the Americas for thousands of years. She has been vilified as Malinche by many generations. This book recovers her voice.

The book dramatizes the power of a woman to manifest and interpret a more profound retelling of a historical female figure, utilizing historical notes, advanced literary skills, profound empathy, and powerful rhetorical devices to shed light on the historical figure Malinalli and to inspire all of us to tell our stores.

This book impels us that we must hear our stories told by our people-our terms on our terms. This is a potent way to observe Women's History Month.

The event will be free to the public. This campus also features extensive free and covered parking.

The evening will feature author Veronica Chapa reading from the book and answering questions. Nuestra Palabra will also curate a list of additional speakers, including representatives from City Council, the Mexican Consul, and local Latina writers who, too, are sharing their voices.  Nuestra Palabra Director, Professor Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante will act as Master of Ceremonies.

Nuestra Palabra will curate an exhibit of books by and about Latinos and visual arts by local Latino artists.

The evening will culminate with a question-and-answer session with Veronica Chapa led by the Latina book club Latinas y Libros HTX. She will then take time to sign books and take pictures with the public.
