"Mindfulness-Based Self-Care Strategies to Mitigate Burnout and Promote Resilience."

Burnout has reached pandemic proportions in the caring professions and is the common endpoint of the various occupational stress syndromes. In addition to traditional self-care practices such as maintaining good professional boundaries to protect ourselves in the workplace and a good program of rest and relaxation to regenerate ourselves outside of work, there is now considerable evidence that mindfulness-based self-care practices are also effective. In this presentation, we will discuss two such practices that we find especially helpful - mindful awareness practice, and mindful nature connection practice, offer a short experiential taste of both, and have time for group discussion.

Dr Michael Kearney, MD.

Michael Kearney has over 40 experience of working in palliative care. He is Medical Director of the Palliative Care Consultation Service at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. His latest book, The Nest in The Stream: Lessons from Nature on Being with Pain (Parallax Press, 2018) offers an eco-spiritual model of self-care and resilience that combines nature connection and mindfulness meditation. He was lead author on an article published in JAMA in 2009 entitled, “Self-care of physicians working at the end-of-life.” He is the author of two other books, Mortally Wounded: Stories of Soul Pain, Death, and Healing (3 rd Edition, Mandorla Books, 2021), and A Place of Healing: Working with Nature and Soul at the End of Life (Spring Journal Books, 2009), and teaches nationally and internationally.
