CoSocial Tech Volunteer Kickoff
This is an initial tech volunteer kick off for CoSocial.
If you're interested in volunteering and/or eventually doing some paid work in supporting independent, co-op owned social media in Canada, please join this first kick off meeting.
The below was sent as part of an email to people who previously expressed interest in getting involved.
About CoSocial
To remind you: we’re a Canadian co-op focused on providing sustainable, safe, federated social media services. You let us know that you’d be interested in volunteering with your technical skills.
In terms of scale, we’re aiming to host 20K people across Canada on a server instance. Our financial models suggest that we can do this sustainably for a very low annual membership fee, something around $50. So eventually, anyone joining the moderation or operations teams can expect to be paid for their time.
Some things we’re thinking about:
Running the Mastodon codebase as the main instance
Setting that codebase and system architecture up for scale
Running things on Canadian servers and services
How to organize support, with on-call and basic ticketing
We’d love for you to join the CoSocial volunteer community
Please join the first meeting to get to know everyone. Going forward, what we’d ask for as a commitment is that you spend about an hour a week keeping up with messages, and maybe up to 5 hours per week in doing work on code, servers, and technical documentation.
Some other resources we'll onboard people to include:
a Slack for coordination
a Github org at https://github.com/CoSocial-Canada
