Larta Institute

Larta Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization accelerating innovation and entrepreneurship. Our mission is to foster science and technology innovation for a sustainable planet.

Our planet is experiencing significant global problems created by human behavior and policies affecting the environment, food, education, energy and healthcare systems. New science and technology play a critical role in transforming how we sustainably feed, fuel and heal the world.

LARTA was founded in 1993 and funded by the State of California as a Los Angeles Regional Technology Alliance to stimulate the economic development of technology-based enterprises. Now known as Larta Institute, the organization has become a national partner for numerous federal government agencies — including DARPA, NIH, DOE, NSF, NIST, NOAA and USDA — to commercialize novel research and innovation.

Today, Larta Institute’s innovation platform and ecosystem accelerate new science and technology from idea to sustainable enterprise by providing a unique combination of connections, resources and funding. We have helped over 4,500 startups, and our alumni have raised more than $7 billion in external funding.

Together, let’s feed, fuel and heal the world. To learn more, visit: Larta.org

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC)

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation is a nonprofit organization focused on equitable economic growth in the Los Angeles region. We use research to advance key industries, provide business assistance, collaborate with educational institutions to develop a robust workforce, and provide government officials with economic data to ensure the continued growth of L.A. County.

SLATE-Z

South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z) is a historic and unprecedented cross-sector collective impact effort with over 100 public, private, academic, and community partners.

Our mission is to revitalize South Los Angeles by moving residents to economic opportunity.

We envision a South LA that is a safe, healthy place to live, play, grow, and thrive. We are building a climate-resilient community with a dynamic local economy, living wage jobs, high-achieving students, safe streets, green spaces, and accessible public transportation.

SoLa Impact

SoLa Impact is a family of real estate funds with a double bottom line strategy focused on preserving, rehabbing, and building high-quality affordable housing in Black and brown communities. SoLa’s proven track record leverages data-driven social impact strategies to deliver market returns. SoLa Impact is one of SoCal's largest private affordable and workforce housing developers with over 2,000 units under management and 3,000 units in development/construction. Our innovative model, vertically integrated operation, and proprietary construction processes have allowed us to build affordable housing at half the cost than other developers - an average of $275K per unit.

SoLa continues to make progress in its efforts to ensure its developments help address climate change and that SoLa builds the infrastructure to enable long-term sustainability of low-income communities. As such, SoLa leverages a model of “embedded sustainability” to develop buildings that are both operationally efficient and climate resilient. For example, 100% of SoLa’s ground-up projects take advantage of Transit Oriented Corridors (TOC) with limited parking and close proximity to major transit to discourage vehicle use and encourage the use of public transportation. Furthermore, we anticipate the use of modular and standardized construction techniques will further reduce SoLa’s construction waste by up to 35% along with significant embodied carbon savings compared to traditional construction methods. Several of SoLa's marquee sustainability initiatives include solar, EV chargers, e-bikes, and the annual host of the US Green Building Council of California's Green Building Conference.

Additional Speaker:

ThermoShade, Larta Venture Fellows Alumni

ThermoShade is an outdoor cooling company that aims to make our public spaces more comfortable for people to work, learn, and play—and to make our cities more resilient to climate change. ThermoShade is developing a passive cooling panel that can be retrofitted to outdoor spaces, creating a shady environment that feels up to 20°F cooler than a basic awning, without using any electricity or water. ThermoShade panels can provide relief to anyone subjected to extended heat exposure, such as frontline workers, commuters waiting for buses, students playing on asphalt playgrounds, restaurant and warehouse workers, and sports participants and attendees.
