Join us to learn about public transportation career pathways in maintenance, engineering, recruiting/human resources, and zero emission fleet technology.

This final Lunch & Learn of the 6-part series also kicks off our 

initiative to directly engage young adults (18-25 years) and youth of all ages -- to share their ideas on how we can best attract youth to mobility careers; and prepare the “workplace and workforce” for today … and tomorrow.

Iyai+ Lunch & Learn 6:  Why Mobility Careers Matter - APTA Emerging Leaders Share Their Stories

This week, Ms. Laverda Allen shares some of the highlights and challenges she has experienced during a lifetime in infrastructure leadership and community activism, and the wisdom she has to share with those just beginning their careers. 

In 1989, Ms. Allen founded The Allen Group, a small construction management company that has led complex infrastructure projects such as the BART East Bay Extensions, BART SFO Extension, San Francisco International Airport Expansion program and the State Water Resources Control Board Wastewater Program.

Ms. Allen has over 30 years of experience in the administration and management of large projects, with an emphasis on construction related services, contract compliance for DBE/MBE/WBE participation, public information and community outreach. 

Ms. Allen has conducted numerous workshops and seminars, developed strategic community relations and outreach plans, and has developed DBE/MBE/WBE programs for construction related projects including BART, Caltrans and the State Water Resources Control Board.

This week our webinar features presenters at various stages of their transit careers discussing their work and their own career pathways, and then engaging in an interactive discussion with the audience. 

Iyai's Dr. Beverly Scott and TWC's Shayna Gleason will present an overview of the program series and career landscape, followed by participants in diverse positions talking about their work and careers.

Desi is an Alabama based nonprofit professional, theologian, academic, and lover of all things southern. In her free time she runs an online meditation practice called Meditations with Desi. She writes and speaks about race, religion, gender and how they all interact with each other.

This week, we feature a presentation by and discussion with April Rai, National President of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO). 

April Rai joined COMTO in December 2021 as President & CEO with nearly 20 years of management experience across the public, private, non-profit and education sectors. With the mission as a focus, April works to build upon COMTO’s 52-year history of ensuring equitable opportunities and maximum participation for the underrepresented in transportation.
