The Protocol Labs network will meet at Convento do Beato to hear Juan Benet's vision for the future of the network, learn more about the progress and impact being made by network teams, and prepare for a fun-filled week of learning, collaboration, and connection. 

In the evening, we'll meet at Estufa Fria in the evening for the Lab Week opening party. We'll have cocktails, light bites, and music to kick the week off in style.

This is a virtual event, with an in-person broadcast in Lisbon. We invite LabWeek22 participants and others in Lisbon to join us at Convento do Beato for drinks, light bites, and discussion.

Join us for a live virtual talk and conversation from Foresight Institute's Allison Duettmann on the technological reasons for existential hope. From brain computer interfaces to crypto-commerce to robotics, Allison sits at the intersection of many of these trends and is working to coordinate these factors towards flourishing futures. Allison will deliver a talk and then sit down with a conversation with Protocol Labs' Founder Juan Benet, and finally the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the speakers.

‍This event is part of the Breakthroughs in Computing Speaker Series, on how technology will shape society in the next 5 to 25 years. Hosted by Protocol Labs, this series runs every evening from Oct 24-28. It's designed to bring people together, sharing convivial drinks, thoughtful discussions, and new connections.

Learn where the current developments in artificial intelligence and digital minds are leading society and how we step up to the challenges that will arise in this field. Nick will sit down with Juan for a wide-ranging conversation before the audience has the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the speakers.

Breakthroughs in Computing: Digital Minds and AI

Technological advances have enabled mass surveillance at a scale unimagined even by "1984," George Orwell's dystopian novel published in 1949.

Current structures allow for governments, large corporations, and who knows who else to spy on, and in some cases control, parts of our lives that should remain private.

Join us for a live virtual talk and conversation from two experts in the field. First, we'll hear from Ahmed Ghappour, an Associate Professor of Law at Boston University and the General Counsel at Nym Technologies, a company building privacy infrastructure using blockchain technology. 

Next, we'll hear from physicist and machine-learning researcher Max Tegmark on Orwellian systems and ways to escape them. Max Erik Tegmark is a Swedish-American physicist, cosmologist and machine learning researcher. He is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the president of the Future of Life Institute.

Breakthroughs in Computing: Convergent Research on Brain-Computer Interfaces

A group run led by the incredible Wayne Mask from Protocol Labs! Come join a ~9km run (5.5 miles) with multiple stopping points along the way for anyone who needs a break or doesn't want to run that far: 

Explore the other side of Lisbon with new and old friends while breaking a sweat. The group will meet at 8AM sharp at the marina at Parque Marechal Carmona.
