Phanish Puranam is a Professor of Strategy, the Roland Berger Chaired Professor of Strategy and Organisation Design at INSEAD.

 Besides publishing his research extensively in peer-reviewed journals, Phanish has also written several books, including the “The Microstructure of Organizations” (Oxford University Press, 2018) and "Corporate Strategy: Tools for analysis and decisions" (co-authored with Bart Vanneste, Cambridge University Press, 2016) which is used as a reference in MBA programs around the world.

His current work has focused on human-centric organisation design -  understanding the evolutionary adaptations that lead us to prefer certain modes of organisations and how these can inform the design of non-hierarchical organisations, the design of informal organisation, and organisational architectures that support self-assembling teams.

Tamás Dávid-Barrett is a behavioural scientist, who asks what traits allow humans to live in large and culturally complex societies. His work focuses on how the structure of social networks change during falling fertility, urbanisation, and migration; as well as, how social networks vary over the human life-course. He teaches at Trinity College, University of Oxford, and is affiliated with the Population Studies Research Institute in Helsinki, Finland.

During this talk, Tamás will share his work studying cooperation in social networks, matriocracy, regulating inequality, and more.

Bjarte Bogsnes is the Chairman of Beyond Budgeting Roundtable (BBRT), author of "Implementing Beyond Budgeting - Unlocking the Performance Potential", an international business speaker and is the winner of a Harvard Business Review/McKinsey Management Innovation award.

He's been heading up the implementation of Beyond Budgeting at Equinor (formerly Statoil), Scandinavia’s largest company. Equinor realized that traditional leadership and management practices no longer work in organisations operating in business environments that are more complex, dynamic and unpredictable than ever. The company implemented innovative alternatives to traditional management, like abolishing traditional budgets and calendar-based management in favour of more decentralized, agile and human processes.

We have invited Bjarte to share his insights on alternative models for large, complex organisations, so we may learn from these past experiences as we design DAOs.

DAO contributor as a service: Designing interfaces for AIs to participate in DAOs

Systems Thinking offers us a wealth of insights to design better DAOs. For this session, we have invited two experts in Cybernetics to share their learnings.

Angela has three decades of experience in Cybernetics in the Centre of Systems Studies, Hull University. She's now an Emeritus Fellow at the Centre for Systems Studies, a Fellow in the British Cybernetics Society, and an invited professor in several universities in Latin-America and the UK. She's also devoted to the Metaphorum, an NGO aiming to continue developing Stafford Beer's legacy.

Jon has worked for over 35 years in the co-operative business sector. He has established and co-managed a range of businesses including retail outlets, a manufacturing plant, and a chain of supermarkets. He pioneered the use of the Viable Systems Model, in both large cooperatives and an eco-community, co-authored the book "A Complexity Approach to Sustainability" with Angela, and consulted and run workshops for 4 Universities (in Colombia, Cuba, Spain, Oman, Romania and for the Government of Victoria, Australia) on the use of The Viable System Model.

DAOs and the Viable System Model

Every four seconds, another person enters a human trafficking situation somewhere in the world. It is estimated that there are over 40 million people in modern-day slavery today – more than any other time in history.

In the effort to design organisations to empower individuals and "liberate them" it feels important to understand the big issue of slavery in corporations as it will probably give us interesting insights and considerations for DAO design.

To make sense of this important issue and its relevance to today’s organizations, Matt Friedman will offer a comprehensive update on this topic. His talk will explore the following:

- The changing human trafficking paradigm;

- The relationship between human trafficking and modern slavery;

- A comprehensive summary of global trends and patterns;

- A description of the relationship between modern slavery and ESG.

- A detailed description of the relationship between human trafficking and business risk; and

- A description of tangible, practical tools and approaches used by corporations throughout the world to help identify and address this potential problem.

Matt Friedman is an international human trafficking expert with more than 30 years’ experience. He is CEO of The Mekong Club, an organization of Hong Kong’s leading businesses which have joined forces to help end all forms of modern slavery. Mr. Friedman previously worked for USAID and the United Nations in over 30 countries. Mr. Friedman offers technical advice to numerous governments, banks and corporations working to eliminate all forms of modern slavery and is the author of twelve books. In 2017, Mr. Friedman won Asia’s prestigious “Communicator of the Year” Gold Award.

The Mekong Club is one of the first not-for-profit organizations of its kind in Asia to use a ‘business-to-business’ approach to fight slavery.  Bridging the gap between the public and private sectors, the Mekong Club helps companies of all sizes to understand the complexities of human trafficking and to reduce their vulnerability within their supply chains/business environment. Together with business partners, the Mekong Club is spearheading innovative and strategic projects to achieve a slave-free world.

Matt's new Penguin book, WHERE WERE YOU?: A PROFILE OF MODERN SLAVERY, has been published and is available worldwide. In this memoir, he explores the early days of meeting modern slavery survivors and recounts true stories of enslavement in Asia. He recalls painful moments that literally changed his life, reflect back on the different approaches to fighting human trafficking over the last 35 years and give an account of the early beginnings of the fight against modern slavery before the phrase “human trafficking” was adopted. As he reflects on the deeply personal lessons learned, his first and foremost goal for this book is to motivate more people to join him in helping to fight this global crime.

Modern Slavery and the Private Sector with Matt Friedman

Bartek Starodaj is currently the Director of Housing for the City of Kingston, New York. In this role, he manages housing-related grants, supports the construction of new market-rate and affordable housing, and develops policies to provide stability and protections for that need it most. Bartek is also a founding board member of the Kingston City Land Bank. He has served as the Board Secretary for three years helping to ensure that the organization’s activities live up to its mission to expand housing accessibility for Kingston’s citizens and that its programs reach households that are currently underrepresented among the city’s homeowners. 

Prior to joining the City of Kingston, Bartek was the lead account manager for two marketing agencies. He also served on the German Marshall Fund’s Urban and Regional Policy team fostering transatlantic development initiatives for major U.S. and European cities.

Francesca’s work is dedicated to creating organizing structures and cultures that contribute to a more healthy system for all. Leen is a trained deep democracy facilitator and trainer. She is co-founder of All for Climate and co-spark of RegensUnite. She is also active in various local community projects.

Lana is a Filipina, now based in the Netherlands, who designs spaces for “KAPWA” (shared inner selves) to flourish. She guides founders, community leaders and changemakers in re-imagining, designing and facilitating spaces for belonging, liberation and healing. 

Lana is the author of the book: Community Builder Designing Communities for Change and she is also the chairperson of the Neurodiversity Foundation, and co-founders of Community Rituals and Neurodiversity Education Academy.

Engagement is a big buzzword, and it's one of the main metrics that we, as community builders, weavers, founders, measure our communities. Asking our members to be highly engaged has a pitfall - It carries with it an expectation that there is one right way where members are expected to participate, a specific tempo or energy that people need to bring in to the community or organization. I prefer to see engagement as A SLIDER. We need to provide differentiated means for people to engage in ways that are nurturing for them. Engagement means empowering people to connect, contribute, activate, support and respond in ways that are regenerative. This means we take into account the depth, breadth and focus that is possible for an individual in a given moment.

Community Series #1: Rethinking Engagement as a Slider by Lana Jelenjev

Dave started work in an NGO post-University and then moved on to HR & Training in the late 70s when he started working with computers. That together with a diploma from The Certified Accountants got him a job as Development Accountant in the same firm where he headed up the Treasury function and was responsible for computerisation. An MBA in financial management saw him move into consultancy and software designing decision support systems in what became Data Sciences where he became a General Manager (creating MURCO) and the Corporate Business Development Manager where he created the Genus Programme (an integration of JAD/RAD, Object Orientation and Legacy Management) which was one of the main components in the turn around of that company. IBM acquired the company 1997 and, after that, his more public career started.

At IBM, he was a director of The Institute for Knowledge Management and the Cynefin Center, and in 2004 became the founder and chief scientific officer of The Cynefin Company.

The Cynefin Co has worked for almost two decades in partnership with academics, artists and complexity scientists and has been taking a fresh look at the whole process of design. Bringing the evolutionary concept of exaltation (radical repurposing of traits) and work on weak signal detection for unarticulated need mapping representing some of the outputs of this process. The use of distributed ethnography is changing the way we design health services as well as society in general and this has been pioneered by Dave Snowden and his team.

In this talk, he'll share some of his rich experience rethinking sense-making and system design.

Rethinking Design Thinking with Dave Snowden

Tim is the co-founder of scenarioDNA a research consultancy that advises global clients on how to leverage cultural trends. Tim is also a Part-Time Associate Teaching Professor at Parsons the New School of Design where he teaches trend analysis and design strategy.  He is the co-inventor of a patented methodology of Culture Mapping that analyzes patterns in language using computational linguistics and machine learning to identify and visualize trend narratives and forecasts. His work helps companies understand and leverage the dynamics of cultural change for a broad range of innovation challenges from new product and brand development to horizon scanning. Clients include Honda, KEF Acoustics, IKEA, Nike, Hilton Worldwide, and Verizon.  Tim is also a frequent speaker on topics related to culture, society, and trends and has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, USA Today, Vogue, Fast Company, and Quartz.

Culture is a story system. Today's challenges require a social science approach to analyzing culture and applying actions in sync with the natural cycle of power and dissent, from protest to policy. We can see the results of shortsighted and top-surface methods to cultural insight imploding around us. From greenwashing in the midst of a climate "permacrisis", to the commercial laziness of relying on celebrity influencers for relevance that quickly devolves into toxic hate speech. Culture matters. But our strategies need to reflect that. In this talk, Tim will explain how the concept of Culture Mapping can help us understand the system of language and stories and speculate and cultivate divergent possible futures.  New prompt engineering tools like Midjourney are rooted in language and cultural bias.  If we can unlock the linguistic system of culture we can take a more a more generative yet expansive approach to make our future more sustainable.

 Ph.D. is an Organizational Psychologist, serial entrepreneur and founder of XLNC, a consulting, training and psychometrics firm that solves difficult business problems with psychological science and innovative technology. Previously, he was the Founder and CEO of LeaderAmp, an award-winning platform for expert and Artificially Intelligent coaching and assessment until May of 2022. In his 25+ year career in multinationals such as AT&T, Motorola, Merck and Infosys, Dr. Barney has innovated interdisciplinary science and technology resulting in four patents, ten books, 43 peer-reviewed works and over 200 keynotes.

In 2020, LeaderAmp won the AI Award for Human Capital Development. In 2018, his team won two competitive international awards from the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology and the Association of Test Publishers. Since 2014, he has served on the Business Affairs committee of the board of not-for-profit scientific publisher Annual Reviews. He holds a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Tulsa.

Satoshi’s original goal was to create technology that overcomes the historical disasters of centralized, untrustworthy social systems. DAOs have potential to change that but from Mt. Gox, Three Arrows Capital, to rugpulls and FTX, human sources of risk are still limiting the full potential.

This presentation will briefly review Enterprise Risk Management history before introducing the relevant interdisciplinary organizational science of individual, team, and organizational risk management. It will introduce meta-analytically supported evidence from traditional organizations that likely generalizes to DAO management. At the same time, it will review other findings such as Cialdini’s ethical persuasion science, which is likely even more important in a DAO than in a traditional firm. The latest, metrologically-oriented, objective psychometric methods are ideal to detect and mitigate these risks in DAOs, but when these computer-adaptive assessments are deployed on Web 2.0 infrastructure, they suffer from all the traditional limitations of legacy cloud/mobile technology. This is unhelpful for realizing the full potential of DAOs.

The presentation will close with a vision for research that ultimately results in novel smart contracts, and multisig NFTs to systematically assess and mitigate these organizational risks in ways that are immutable, appropriately transparent, censorship resistant, and effective in reducing risks and potentially helping DAOs become “antifragile”.

The Case for On-Chain DAO Risk Management with Psychometrics with Matt Barney

Pmgangi will present the work they've been doing with RnDAO's Project TogetherCrew towards navigating privacy and data management regulation in Web3.

The session will cover the main concept of the GDPR from a practical point of view, i. e. the people  in charge of an entity subject to the compliance of GDPR and needing an idea of the basic concepts of GDPR and necessary policies and documents (which an external advisor prepares for them in relation to GDPR compliance).

Over the last decade, blockchains and crypto have opened up a new terrain for radical action. It is not surprising, however, that the crypto space has also become overrun by unscrupulous marketing, theft and scams. The problem is real, but it isn’t a new one. One of the major reasons is the way in which blockchain / crypto are framed through representational models of old models imposed on a new medium. Research:
We finally released the conclusions of our research project about SubDAOs, done with the good folks at Sobol. You can read our 2 articles about it on our RnDAO Mirror blog. The first one is about Why and How we SubDAO and the second one explores the Top 9 Challenges of DAO Unit Success.

Then, you can also read our working paper on Community Health called What is a DAO Community and when is it healthy which is a framework that goes over our current thinking around Communities and DAOs and that we believe will help DAO Community Leaders become more effective. This work is funded by Aragon Network DAO and Polygon.

Next Tuesday (12th of July), we'll welcome Angela Espinosa and Jon Walker. They have each spent over three decades researching and facilitating systems thinking approaches for organisations. We've invited them to share a masterclass in Cybernetics and the Viable System Model, with plenty of insights from the world of cooperatives. Register here.
